the ongoing conflict has dealt a devastating blow to the education system in the gaza strip. since august, the united nations relief and works agency for palestine refugees in the near east has launched an initiative called "return to learning" in the gaza strip. volunteers will provide teaching, art, music and other activities for school-age children in the gaza strip in 45 schools converted into shelters.

cgtn reporter magdi aslim:in the gaza strip, students no longer receive traditional education from teachers as before, and teachers are no longer the same as before. both teachers and students are learning how to survive in order to continue living and return to a normal lifestyle as much as possible. with the support of unrwa, some teachers and volunteers decided to resume teaching order with the hope of a better future.
this is a school in deir al-balah in the central gaza strip, where teachers are teaching arabic to children. because there are no textbooks, the children can only write and draw on white paper. because there are no tables and chairs, the children have to lie on the nylon cloth used to set up tents to listen to the class. but even in such difficult conditions, the children still cherish such learning opportunities. as part of the "return to learning" initiative of the united nations relief and works agency for palestine refugees in the near east, this school teaches basic subjects such as arabic, english, and mathematics to about 300 students of all ages. the school has about 20 teachers, all of whom are volunteers.
student mira abu sultan:i learned a lot, especially the knowledge that i had learned before but had forgotten. now we reviewed it in school and we also learned a lot of useful knowledge.
student parent mohammed salami:thanks to this project promoted by the united nations, our children can continue to study, but the reality is cruel, especially for me and other displaced people, the children's future is full of uncertainty.
because a large number of teaching facilities were destroyed by the war, and many schools were converted into temporary settlements for displaced persons, the gaza strip was unable to continue teaching for two consecutive school years. most importantly, the israeli military's nearly one-year military operation in the gaza strip has seriously threatened the lives of local students and teachers.
ismail tawabata, spokesman for the gaza strip media office:we have many institutions implementing educational programs, but these programs in no way replace the formal mainstream education system, where students go back to school to receive formal education. we once again call for an end to the war, an end to the attacks on the education system, and for students to be able to return to school.
