huang zongde is 93 years old this year. in his nearly 40 years of military career, huang zongde experienced the battle of crossing the yangtze river, the jiangxi bandit suppression campaign, and the war to resist u.s. aggression and aid korea. on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china, huang zongde was awarded the "medal of the republic".

during the war to resist u.s. aggression and aid korea, the chinese people's volunteer army launched the jincheng counterattack in july 1953.

on the night of july 13, the general offensive began. huang zongde led his entire class to break through seven barbed wire fences and capture the enemy's outpost. the next day, he encountered the remaining enemy hiding in the tunnel alone.

in this battle, huang zongde destroyed 3 enemy bunkers, killed 7 enemies, captured 22 enemies alone, and seized 12 carbines, 8 rifles, 4 submachine guns, and 2 walkie-talkies. he was awarded the first-class meritorious service and second-class combat hero of the chinese people's volunteer army for his heroic performance. he was only 22 years old at that time. however, his comrades who had fought side by side with him did not live to see this day.

huang zongde: when we were operating in a small unit in pingkang, two mines killed three people and injured one. i was there looking at three martyrs. one was zhao zhengkui, one was lu gouqiang, and one was zhu zongshao. the three names remain in my mind. the three of them died. we would rather sacrifice than lose the martyrs. we must not lose the martyrs.
