beijing, september 21 (reporter zhang xiaohua)data released online this week in the nature supplement "nature index 2024 artificial intelligence" showed that from 2019 to 2023, 10 institutions had the largest increase in artificial intelligence (ai) research output in the nature index, namely the chinese academy of sciences, harvard university, peking university, tsinghua university, zhejiang university, massachusetts institute of technology, max planck society, german helmholtz association of national research centers, university of science and technology of china and shanghai jiao tong university.
the nature index tracks research articles published in high-quality natural science and health science journals, as well as the contributions of relevant institutions, countries or regions to these studies. it found that from 2019 to 2023, the share of ai research in the united states almost doubled, while the share of ai research in china increased more than fivefold during the same period. by 2023, the united states will still rank first in ai research, with china, germany, the united kingdom and france in the top five, but the gap between the united states and china is narrowing rapidly.
this supplement also analyzes the ai research output of the industry. in 2023, the five countries with the highest ai output in the industry are the united states, china, the united kingdom, germany and japan.
