before the start of the new semester, all the leadership team members of zhejiang gongshang university lived in the student dormitory of the jiaogong road campus for a week after the renovation. through the "trial stay", they experienced the living environment of college students, such as food, accommodation and transportation, and comprehensively checked the preparation of the campus. after the first report of this by the paper (www.thepaper.cn), it caused heated discussions. many people praised it and said, "it is recommended that all universities learn from it." some people also doubted, "will the president really live in the student dormitory for a week?"
on september 18, professor yu jianxing, secretary of the school’s party committee, said in an interview with the paper that except for one person on duty at other campuses every day, all school leaders lived in the student dormitory of the jiaogong road campus from september 2 to 7. on the first day, they inspected the infrastructure, found 30 problems and put forward suggestions for rectification. he also admitted that he was old and his “old bones” tossed and turned on the hard bed and found it difficult to fall asleep. “so we are committed to improving the learning and living conditions of our students on campus.”
regarding the view that "young people should suffer a little and don't need to care too much about student accommodation conditions", he said that young people must suffer in order to grow, but the scenes of young people suffering today are different from our generation. there is no need for young people today to suffer in terms of food, accommodation and transportation. "we suffered when we were young so that our descendants would not have to suffer the same hardship."
zhejiang gongshang university is a university jointly established by the zhejiang provincial government, the ministry of commerce and the ministry of education. its predecessor was the hangzhou secondary commercial school founded in 1911. in 1980, it was approved by the state council to establish the hangzhou business school, and was renamed in 2004. the school has three campuses: xiasha, jiaogong road and tonglu. the jiaogong road campus is the location of the former hangzhou business school and its predecessor, zhejiang provincial business school. in may this year, the revitalization plan for the jiaogong road campus was launched, and the school buildings were repaired and upgraded, and several new teaching and research buildings and student dormitories were built, which will be able to meet the needs of more than 5,000 full-time students. the first phase of upgrading projects such as dormitories, classrooms, study stations, sports fields, and canteens has been completed.
the paper"members of the leadership team will stay in the student dormitory for one week." what was the process of proposing and deciding this motion?
yu jianxing: the time for the renovation of the jiaogong road campus was limited. i had already walked around the campus on august 31, but i always felt that i had just seen a lot of things in a hurry. the canteen was not open at that time, some washing facilities had not been installed, and the stadium and playground had just been renovated. i was worried, so i proposed to the leadership team that all members live in the student dormitory for a week, so that it would be easier to find problems and solve them more efficiently. later, a colleague said that it was different whether you lived in or not. after you moved in, the construction progressed faster and problems were solved immediately.
the paperq: how many members of the school leadership team are there? how did they live in the dormitory? how many people were there in one room? how many nights did they stay there?
yu jianxing: the school leadership team consists of 8 members, including me, president wang yonggui, vice president zhao yingjun, deputy secretary of the party committee xiang ming, vice president chen yantai, deputy secretary of the party committee yuan jinxiang, vice president gu qing, and secretary of the discipline inspection commission hu jinsheng. undergraduate and graduate students registered on the 5th and 13th respectively. we moved in on the 2nd. because the canteen was not open until the 3rd, we had dinner at the xiasha campus or at home that day and then rushed to the jiaogong road campus to check in. we ate in the canteen from the 3rd. the student dormitory is a 4-person room. we each lived in one room. except for a leader who took turns to be on duty at the xiasha campus every night, the other 7 people lived in the student dormitory during those days.
the paper: can you describe the schedule of a certain day when the school leaders stay in the dormitory?
yu jianxing:at that time, the teachers were not at work yet. some school leaders had their offices on the jiaogong road campus. during the trial stay, they sometimes went to the office, but we spent most of the day walking around the campus, including dormitories, sports fields, classrooms, lecture rooms, laboratories, etc., to check the infrastructure. we had lunch and dinner in the cafeteria, and we had them at different times to get a feel for the amount of food at different times. we also told the cafeteria aunt to prepare more food for the children after school started. don't be afraid of losses, the school will give subsidies, but we must not let the children feel that there are not enough dishes.
the paper: which dormitory did you live in and how did you feel during those nights?
yu jianxing: i live in room 217, building 16. to be honest, i am 57 years old and my old bones are tossing and turning on the hard bed. it is difficult to fall asleep (laughing). i am not used to it. so we are committed to improving the learning and living conditions of students at school.
the paper: some people believe that "young people should endure a little hardship" and don't need to care too much about the accommodation conditions of college students. what do you think?
yu jianxing:young people must endure hardships in order to grow, but the scenes of hardship for young people today are different from those of our generation. young people today do not need to suffer in terms of food, accommodation and transportation - we endured hardships when we were young so that our descendants would not have to endure the same hardships.
the paper: during the stay-in experience, what problems did the school leaders discover and what measures did they take?
yu jianxing: on the first day, we found 30 problems when we inspected the infrastructure and proposed rectification suggestions. for example, there was a crack in the runway and a gap in the steps, which needed to be repaired; a hook needed to be added somewhere in the dormitory; and all the faucets that did not flow water normally were labeled. the library has not been fully renovated yet, so i can't check it carefully, but i feel there is room for improvement, such as enough sockets, and functional areas such as self-study and reading areas, seminar areas, and reading areas. some other problems may only be exposed after students study and live for a while. more than 1,300 students have moved in, and there is no obvious lack of work so far.
