on september 13, the 11th session of the standing committee of the 14th national people's congress voted and passed the decision of the standing committee of the national people's congress on awarding national medals and honorary titles on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china.

15 people were awarded national medals and national honorary titles. among them,wang yongzhi, the first chief designer of china's manned space program, academician of the chinese academy of engineering and famous chinese aerospace technology expert, was awarded the "medal of the republic".

wang yongzhi was born on november 17, 1932 in changtu county, liaoning province. he was admitted to the department of aeronautics of tsinghua university (later merged into beihang university) in 1952. he graduated from the moscow aviation institute with a major in missile design in 1961 and was awarded the title of engineer. he then returned to china and worked in the general design department of the china academy of launch vehicle technology.

in 1964, he served as the leader of the medium- and short-range rocket general design group and the deputy director of the medium-range rocket general design office. in 1969, he served as the deputy chief designer of intercontinental missiles. in 1986, he was appointed the sixth president of the china academy of launch vehicle technology. in 1992, he was elected as an academician of the international academy of astronautics and a foreign academician of the russian academy of space science. in 1994, he was elected as one of the first academicians of the chinese academy of engineering. in 2000, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the moscow state aviation academy of russia. in 2003, he won the national highest science and technology award. on may 4, 2010, the asteroid with the international permanent number 46669 was named "wang yongzhi star". on june 12, 2017, he was selected into the first batch of candidates for the "august 1st medal". in june 2018, he served as the honorary dean of the school of aeronautics and astronautics of tsinghua university. in september 2019, he was awarded the title of "the most beautiful struggler".

on june 11, 2024, academician wang yongzhi passed away.

wang yongzhi has long been committed to the overall design and development of china's strategic missiles and launch vehicles. he has participated in and presided over the design and development of 6 missile models, 2 launch vehicle models and the "shenzhou" series of spacecraft. he has been awarded the honorary title of "meritorious scientist of manned spaceflight".

as one of the pioneers of china's manned space program, he participated in the formulation of china's manned space program development blueprint, participated in the demonstration of the necessity and development path of manned space program, promoted china's manned space program to "start with spacecraft", and took the lead in proposing the "three-step" development strategy of manned space program;

he presided over the engineering design, developed four unmanned flight tests and the technical work of the shenzhou v and vi manned space flights, and made great contributions to the successful completion of my country's first manned space flight and the historic breakthrough in manned space flight;

he organized the formulation of the implementation plan for my country's manned space station project and participated in the in-depth demonstration of the plan. he played an important role in many major technical decisions. he made outstanding contributions to the demonstration and determination of the overall implementation plan for my country's space station and the promotion of the manned lunar exploration project.
