at dawn, the sky was a little pale, and the prepared ingredients were placed on the kitchen chopping board. the young soldier was waving a big spoon to stir-fry the food in the morning light.
this is the daily life of officers and soldiers stationed on the qinghai-tibet line.
for he jie, the days repeat themselves but are not boring. he always feels that pots and pans are his "weapons" and delicious food is his "fruits of war". although the branches of the army are different, the dedication is the same.
in the camp of a large station service support detachment of the qinghai-tibet military supply department in golmud city, haixi mongolian and tibetan autonomous prefecture, there is a silent cook named he jie.
when i first met he jie, he was busy shuttling around in the kitchen, his cheeks were red from the plateau, beads of sweat were hanging on his face, but he still had a warm and honest smile. he jie skillfully fiddled with various kitchen utensils in his hands, and his focused expression made people feel his love and dedication to this job at once.
in 2006, 17-year-old he jie was deeply attracted by the image of xu sanduo in the tv series "soldier assault". in the tv series, xu sanduo went from an ordinary farmer's son to a brave special forces soldier. he longed to be like xu sanduo, to hone himself in the army, to become a soldier king, and to contribute his strength to the country and the people.
he jie joined the army in 2007. at that time, he was young and frivolous, with respect and yearning for soldiers in his heart, but fate made him become a cook.
"when i was a recruit, i knew i couldn't become a special forces soldier, so i thought it would be nice to be a car soldier." after joining the company, he jie realized he had become a "cook."
the huge gap in his heart, coupled with the temperature difference and strong ultraviolet radiation on the plateau, caused he jie from sichuan to have unbearable altitude sickness: the food he managed to eat during the day was vomited out in the evening; at night he had a splitting headache and could not fall asleep... in the first few days, in he jie's words, "it was like walking through the gates of hell."
a month later, the physical discomfort gradually disappeared, but he jie began to miss home terribly.
he stood outside the camp looking at the mountains, and the scene in his mind was like a movie - one end of the kunlun mountains was the source of the yangtze river, and going east along the yangtze river and entering peijiang was suining, sichuan, where he was born.
the mountains are closely connected and the river flows slowly. at that moment, he jie seemed to feel that the mountain in front of him was the lingquan mountain in his hometown, and the depths of the mountain was his home.
feeling depressed and a little regretful, he jie, who had just joined the army, was rough and careless in his work. finally, after making a mistake, he was "taught a lesson" by the squad leader: "ability is one thing, morality is another. before learning to cook, you must first learn to be a human being."
it was this conversation that made he jie understand that although the two branches of the military are different, their dedication is the same.
"the old squad leader was a few years older than me, and he was like my own big brother." he jie still remembers that on his first day in the army, the squad leader prepared a particularly sumptuous meal: braised pork, winter melon ribs, cold beef, mushroom stewed chicken, peach cakes, chocolate steamed buns, etc. although more than ten years have passed, the delicious dishes and the squad leader's friendly smile are still deeply imprinted in he jie's mind. in the days that followed, the squad leader not only gave him meticulous care in life, but also taught him by example at work, teaching him how to become an excellent cook.
the work of a cook may seem ordinary, but it is extremely important. every day before dawn, he jie gets up early and starts preparing for the day's meals. he carefully selects ingredients, skillfully cuts vegetables, stir-fries, and cooks soup. his busy figure is like a non-stop spinning top.
he jie knew very well that his comrades were facing harsh environments and tremendous pressure while carrying out their missions on the qinghai-tibet line. a delicious and nutritious meal could not only meet everyone's dietary needs, but also provide them with sufficient energy and motivation.
in 2010, heavy rainfall in the golmud area caused the wenquan reservoir and the golmud river embankment in the upper reaches of the golmud river to be in danger. he jie rushed to the front line with the rescue team. his duty was to ensure three meals a day for the repair team. when his comrades who were soaked all over brought him steaming hot meals, he jie's sense of accomplishment was greatly satisfied. after several days and nights of fighting, his comrades successfully protected the lives and property of the people. this experience not only made he jie more deeply realize the mission and responsibility of soldiers, but also gave him a new understanding of his position.
in 2016, he jie met his wife by chance during a military training for children organized by the municipal youth league committee. in 2017, they got married, and now their child is seven years old. although family responsibilities put pressure on he jie, he never forgot his original intention and mission. he knows that he is not only a husband and a father, but also a soldier. he will continue to serve the country and the people in his post.
he jie has participated in various competitions many times, and won the third-class merit once and the excellent non-commissioned officer four times. he knows that only by constantly improving his professional level can he better serve his comrades. he still gets up early every day, carefully prepares every meal, and adjusts the menu according to the tastes and needs of his comrades, so that everyone can taste the taste of their hometown in a difficult environment.
he jie, an ordinary cook, practices the "two-road" spirit of "not fearing hardship, not fearing death, fighting tenaciously, being willing to be a stepping stone, the army and the people as one family, and national unity" with practical actions, and interprets what is the responsibility and dedication of soldiers. on the qinghai-tibet line and at the green outpost, his story is both ordinary and extraordinary...
