china is the largest trading partner and largest source of investment for the democratic republic of the congo. in 2021, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint construction of the belt and road initiative, further deepening cooperation between china and the democratic republic of the congo. in 2023, the heads of state of the two countries announced that they would upgrade their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

kinshasa, the capital of the democratic republic of the congo, is located on the east bank of the lower reaches of the congo river. it is the third largest city in africa with a permanent population of over 15 million.
