taiwan people's party chairman ko wen-je was detained and denied access to visitors due to his involvement in the jinghua city scandal, but has not filed an appeal so far. it is understood that ko wen-je had a legal meeting with his lawyer today. ko's camp has been conducting a sandbox simulation with the lawyers in the past few days, and many retired legal, political and administrative officials have participated in it. his staff suggested that in a political case, is it useful to appeal? it is just another time to be tortured to death. it is better to face the court directly. ko wen-je has decided not to appeal.
on the 5th of this month, the taipei district court ruled to detain and deny access to visitors. today, three lawyers from ko wen-je's legal team, zheng shenyuan, lu zhengyi, and xiao yihong, issued a joint statement saying that ko wen-je has decided not to appeal the detention and denial of access to visitors ruling.
the statement said, "mr. ko wen-je had already made it clear to his defense attorney before the trial: he had stated in court that he did not want to embarrass the court, and if he was detained, he did not want to appeal. he asked the prosecutor to fulfill all investigation obligations during the two-month detention period, and he would do his best to cooperate with the investigation."
wu zongxian, a kuomintang legislator who once served as a prosecutor, pointed out that whether the appeal is successful depends on the opinion of the people's party chairman ko wen-je. however, if the judge believes that the defendant should be detained, the chances of a successful appeal are actually quite low. for example, in his career as a case-handler, he has never encountered a suspect's successful appeal. however, this is of course not absolute. there are still examples of successful appeals in other prosecutors' cases, but the number is relatively small.
wu zongxian pointed out that the detainees would certainly evaluate the success rate and significance of the appeal. if the appeal is rejected, the situation will become ugly and meaningless. he emphasized that detention and guilt are two different things. if during the detention period, in order to go home, it ends up playing all the cards to one's disadvantage, it is not a smart option. for ko wen-je, he must strive for acquittal, so ko wen-je's decision not to appeal may be a strategic consideration.
