the reporter found out from the expert introduction of tianjin hospital that hu tongxiu is the director of the hospital's obstetrics and gynecology department and chief physician. she holds several social positions, including member of the committee of the gynecologic oncology branch of the tianjin medical association. she has also published many scientific research papers.

during the investigation, the reporter learned that there has been a lot of discussion on the internet. according to reports, the paper that has caused heated discussions is signed by the first author: dan shan (transliterated dan) from the department of obstetrics and gynecology of tianjin hospital, and the corresponding author is tongxiu hu (transliterated hu tongxiu) from the department of obstetrics and gynecology of tianjin hospital. the paper was published in the journal oncology research featuring preclinical and clinical cancer therapeutics.

in may 2022, hoya camphorifolia, an internationally renowned professional academic fraud fighter, revealed the problem of image duplication in the paper on the pubpeer forum. since then, more people have raised concerns about some of the data in the article.

the paper was retracted on july 17, 2024, with professionals pointing out that the invasion assay was strikingly similar to data that appeared in different forms in other articles that had already been published by different authors at different research institutions.

“we contacted the authors and invited them to comment on the issues raised and to provide the original, unmodified data, but they did not respond. therefore, the editors are no longer confident in the integrity of the data in this article and have decided to retract the article.”

the reporter checked letpub sci journal assistant and found out that the journal is a sci zone 4 journal. the reporter learned from relevant medical professionals that sci journals enjoy a high reputation in the medical community and their status is higher than that of chinese core journals. in some tertiary hospitals, publishing papers in sci journals is a necessary condition for appointment or title evaluation. the reporter also found out that the tianjin hospital where hu tongxiu works has been questioned for plagiarism more than once.

the reporter contacted the relevant personnel of tianjin hospital and asked if they could ask director hu tongxiu about the specific situation of the paper, but the personnel responded that director hu was not available for interview. the reporter also asked whether the hospital had specific punishment regulations for paper fraud. the personnel told the reporter that the hospital had relevant punishment regulations, which were formulated in accordance with relevant national requirements, but these were internal to the hospital and were not convenient to be announced to the public.

the research department of the institute said in its reply to the reporter:regarding the letter of inquiry about suspected scientific research integrity issues in the thesis of hu tongxiu, director of the department of obstetrics and gynecology of our hospital, according to the provisions of chapter 2, article 5 of the document "rules for investigation and handling of scientific research dishonesty behavior" (guokefajian [2022] no. 221) issued by 22 departments including the ministry of science and technology and the central propaganda department: "the ministry of science and technology and the chinese academy of social sciences are responsible for coordinating the investigation and handling of scientific research dishonesty in the fields of natural sciences and philosophy and social sciences respectively. if the relevant scientific research dishonesty has aroused widespread social concern or involves multiple departments (units), they may organize joint investigations and handling or coordinate different departments (units) to conduct separate investigations and handling." the national competent department in the field of natural sciences will transfer the scientific research integrity clues proactively detected to the relevant departments and units involved, and conduct verification and handling and provide feedback in accordance with the established procedures required by the document. finally, the relevant national departments will verify the investigation and issue the final authoritative conclusion.
