the latest energy market research released by the bruegel institute in belgium shows that the total amount of natural gas imported by eu countries from russia in a single quarter exceeded the imports from the united states for the first time in nearly two years.

citing data from the bruegel institute, german news agency deutsche presse-agentur reported on the 1st that in the second quarter of this year, eu countries purchased more than 12.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas from russia and 12.3 billion cubic meters from the united states. compared with the first quarter, russian natural gas deliveries fell slightly, but the decline in the united states was even greater.

the study did not specify which countries buy natural gas from russia.

norway remains the largest natural gas supplier to the eu, supplying about 23.9 billion cubic meters in the second quarter. russia was the largest natural gas supplier to the eu until the full escalation of the ukrainian crisis in february 2022. however, since then, the eu has significantly reduced its imports of russian natural gas.

data released by german government departments show that germany no longer imports natural gas from russia. norbert röttgen, a foreign affairs expert of the german opposition christian democratic union, recently called in the welt newspaper to ban natural gas imports from russia within the european union.

according to röttgen, "europeans are spending billions of dollars supporting ukraine while spending billions more to replenish russia's war chest - this is neither responsible, rational, nor reliable."

michael kruse, spokesman for the free democratic party, a member of germany's ruling coalition, believes that the eu could pay ukraine a fixed amount of aid and military assistance in exchange for importing natural gas from russia.

in may this year, due to "one-off factors" such as the failure of major u.s. liquefied natural gas export facilities, europe's monthly natural gas imports from russia exceeded those from the united states for the first time in nearly two years. (finish) (sun shuo)
