on july 25, 2024, the "zen style and elegance - lingnan monk calligraphy and painting and haizhuang temple cultural exhibition" jointly sponsored by the national museum of china and the guangdong provincial cultural relics bureau, hosted by the guangdong provincial museum and guangzhou haizhuang temple, and co-organized by the guangzhou museum of art (guangzhou art museum) opened at the national museum of china. this exhibition is of high standard and rare in history. it exhibits more than 100 cultural relics such as calligraphy, painting, export paintings, ancient books and documents, as well as cultural relics or landscapes in haizhuang temple. it not only shows the development status and unique value of lingnan monks' calligraphy and painting art to the society, but also shows its outstanding achievements in poetry, calligraphy and painting, sutra engraving, garden architecture, and cultural exchanges between the east and the west from the perspective of haizhuang temple, the first buddhist temple open to the outside world in the qing dynasty.

the exhibition is divided into three units: "calligraphy and painting in the zen forest", "ancient charms of haizhuang", and "exchange and integration". it selects representative figures and representative works of lingnan monks' calligraphy and painting, systematically sorts out their artistic development context and artistic style, and shows the cultural accomplishment and artistic attainments of lingnan monks. it also uses artifacts, historical photos, and scripture workshop engravings to show the historical evolution of haizhuang temple, garden architecture and bonsai art, as well as cultural achievements in poetry education and scripture engraving. at the same time, it selects exhibits such as export paintings, foreign books and documents to highlight the special status and outstanding contributions of haizhuang temple in sino-foreign cultural exchanges.
