since the beginning of the flood season in 2024, some schools in 17 provinces across the country have been damaged to varying degrees due to floods. the ministry of education has continued to guide local governments to promote disaster prevention, disaster relief, post-disaster reconstruction and other work to ensure that students start school as scheduled in the fall.

hunan pingjiang qiming middle school is the largest nine-year school in pingjiang county. on august 30, about 1,400 primary and secondary school students started the new semester here.

ouyang keqing, a seventh-grade student at pingjiang qiming middle school: the playgrounds are all brand new, the equipment in the teaching buildings are all brand new, and the whole school gives me a feeling of being neat and clean.

however, the flood mark at the school gate clearly recorded the height of the flood. in early july, due to continuous heavy rainfall, qiming middle school was soaked in water for three days, causing serious damage to the school's power distribution, water supply, teaching facilities and sports venues.

after the flood receded, the school immediately organized faculty and volunteers to carry out drainage, campus disinfection, environmental cleaning and other work. the local government also coordinated a construction team to enter the school for post-disaster repair. on august 25, the campus repair work was completed. the local housing and construction, environmental protection and other departments also organized a special team to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the flooded school buildings.

according to reports, the floods caused a total of 2,216 schools in hunan to be damaged, and 2,210 schools can resume classes normally in the fall. a total of 6 primary and secondary schools (including kindergartens) cannot be put into use normally in the fall due to serious damage and small school scale. the students of these schools have been properly arranged to study in nearby schools and will be able to attend classes as scheduled on september 1.

affected by the heavy rain in mid-july this year, 64 primary and secondary schools in dengzhou, henan province were damaged to varying degrees. during the summer vacation, all schools stepped up repairs, and on the eve of the start of school, the health department carried out comprehensive disinfection of the affected schools.

yao ruipeng, principal of liuji town central school in dengzhou city, henan province: after the disaster, we actively coordinated funds to reinforce and repair school buildings, update teaching equipment, and purchase new desks, chairs and benches. we also organized teachers to conduct home visits and provide psychological counseling for the affected students.

as of the end of august, most of the affected schools have completed repair and reconstruction. for the few that have not been completed, a "school-by-school, one-policy" diversion plan has been formulated to ensure that all students in the affected areas can start school on schedule.
