samsung sdi announced that it will establish a joint venture with gm to manufacture electric vehicle batteries. the production base will be located in indiana, usa, with a total investment of us$3.5 billion. samsung sdi will hold a 50.1% stake in the joint venture, and gm will own a 49.9% stake. mass production is expected to begin in 2027, with an annual output of 27gwh, and will increase to 36gwh year by year.

the battery factory jointly established by samsung sdi and gm will produce nca nickel-cobalt-aluminum ternary lithium batteries. the battery forms are said to be square and cylindrical. the batteries produced will be supplied to gm's electric vehicle assembly. the new factory is expected to provide more than 1,600 jobs locally.

samsung sdi and gm began discussing the joint venture in 2023, but only recently did they officially confirm the cooperation plan and sign an agreement. samsung sdi ceo yoon-ho choi said that he was very happy to cooperate with the number one automaker in the north american market. samsung sdi will be committed to providing high-performance and safe electric vehicle batteries to gm to strengthen the strength of both parties in the electric vehicle industry.
