economic observer network wang yiwei/text on august 28, there was a storm in taiwan’s political arena.

first, at 1:30 a.m., after an all-night trial, the taoyuan district court ruled that zheng wencan, former chairman of the straits exchange foundation of taiwan, could be released on bail pending trial after being detained for 48 days, with the amount of nt$28 million. zheng's relatives and friends took emergency action and sent the bail (in cash) to the court within a few hours. at 5:01 a.m., zheng wencan walked out of the court. reporters at the scene described zheng as "stern-faced and silent" and "obviously thin and with more white hair."

after daybreak, a big battle broke out. the taipei district prosecutor's office directed relevant agencies to split into 48 groups to search and interview units and individuals related to the jinghuacheng case, and brought back 18 people. some of these 18 people were released, some were released on bail, and some were detained and denied access. two key figures, kmt taipei city councillor ying hsiao-wei, were charged with accepting bribes, and weijing headquarters group chairman shen qingjing was charged with offering bribes.

in this way, the two dramas reached their climax on the same day, with various characters appearing on stage, singing, reciting, acting and fighting, and stunning the audience. in the midst of the excitement, it was also difficult for the outside world to distinguish which play was real and which was fake.

in my opinion, the zheng wencan case may be a fake one. lai qingde's real purpose is to use this case to suppress the opposition within the party. if the various factions within the dpp are subdued and zheng wencan also gives in, even if zheng really accepted bribes, the judge will have a way to exonerate him.

as for the jinghuacheng case, whether it is true or not, lai qingde's administration is doing it for real. if they can track down ko wen-je, that would be the best. even if they can't track down ko wen-je, they can still use this case to gain respect.

now, the dpp has three axes to attack ko wen-je, namely the campaign fund false accounting case, the election subsidy fund controversy, and the jinghua city case.

an accountant has already been implicated in the campaign finance fraud case. it is unlikely that this case will be brought to the attention of ko wen-je.

the controversy over election subsidy payments is worth analyzing.

ko wen-je used election subsidy money to purchase a private office, which damaged his image, but it is difficult to frame ko wen-je at a legal level.

because the owner of the election subsidy is indeed the candidate himself.

there are two aspects to prove this. on the one hand, the relevant regulations in taiwan state that "each group of candidates who obtain more than one-third of the votes for election shall be subsidized for their campaign expenses, with a subsidy of nt$30 per vote." according to this regulation, the subsidy is paid to the candidates, not to political parties or other organizations.

on the other hand, both the kuomintang and the democratic progressive party used the word "donate" in their own statements and media reports when handling election subsidy funds. the word "donate" proves that the money was indeed donated by the candidates themselves.

the problem with ke wenzhe is that before him, all the candidates who received election subsidies donated the money. only he bought a private office for himself after receiving the money.

the election subsidy controversy confirms from one aspect that ko wen-je and the people's party's level of public opinion propaganda is indeed not high.

ko wen-je is the chairman of the people's party. his office is used to handle party affairs. from this perspective, this office is public. but the reality is that the democratic progressive party and media celebrities gave ko wen-je's office a "private" hat, and ko wen-je accepted it. then, after media hype and the fact that ko wen-je's wife was going to buy a luxury house, some taiwanese people thought that ko wen-je really put the election subsidy money into his own pocket.

let’s go back to the jinghua city case.

before being arrested, shen qingjing, chairman of the weijing headquarters group, issued a statement saying, "i never give red envelopes to officials, and it is even more impossible for me to give red envelopes to ko p (ko wen-je)."

the only charge that could have put ke wenzhe in jail was bribery. but the person involved said that he did not bribe ke wenzhe.

looking ahead to the future, i believe that the lai ching-te administration will continue to investigate the three cases mentioned above, namely the campaign fund fraud case and the jinghuacheng case. even if they cannot implicate ko wen-je, they will use the cases to damage ko wen-je's reputation. the democratic progressive party will continue to hype up the election subsidy controversy.

as for ko wen-je, if he is truly innocent, he will be able to survive this disaster, otherwise it is hard to say.
