"My name is Liu Wenlong, I am 14.8 years old this year, and I am a freshman of the Class of 2024 majoring in Radiology at Shandong First Medical University..." On August 25, Shandong First Medical University welcomed 5,120 new undergraduate students. Liu Wenlong, who calls himself "14.8 years old", is the youngest "freshman" admitted by the school this year. It is understood that on the day of registration, Liu Wenlong was still more than a month away from his 15th birthday.

On August 25, Shandong First Medical University, the first university in Jinan, took the lead in welcoming new students. On that day, a total of 5,120 undergraduate freshmen registered, of which 2,791 were enrolled in the Jinan campus and 2,329 were enrolled in the Tai'an campus. This is the first time that the number of freshmen enrolled in the Jinan campus of Shandong First Medical University has exceeded that of the Tai'an campus. Big data shows that all the freshmen of the 2024 class of Shandong First Medical University are "post-00s". However, although they are all "post-00s", the age span is not small. Among them, the oldest freshman was born in 2000 and is 24 years old this year; the youngest "Mengxin" was born in October 2009 and is not yet 15 years old. The youngest "Mengxin" who is under 15 years old is "Little Brother" Liu Wenlong.
Liu Wenlong graduated from Rongcheng No. 2 Middle School. He scored 573 points in the college entrance examination this year and was admitted to Shandong First Medical University, majoring in radiology. Because he will not be 15 until October 2, the "little brother" introduced himself as "14.8 years old". The reporter learned that "starting school early" and "skipping grades" were the main reasons why he became a "young college student" before the age of 15.
Liu Wenlong told reporters that he went to primary school when he was four years old, and skipped a grade during primary school, "jumping from the third grade to the fifth grade." Whether it is going to primary school at the age of four or skipping from the third grade to the fifth grade, it is a big challenge. According to the reporter's previous interview experience, this case is more likely to happen in a teacher's family. However, Liu Wenlong said that there is no one in his family who is a teacher, and his family members are not well educated, so they can't give him any guidance, and they haven't made up lessons. "I learned everything from the teacher in school." Liu Wenlong told reporters that when he skipped from the third grade to the fifth grade, he didn't understand the lessons at first, but later it gradually got better.
Because he started school early and skipped grades, Liu Wenlong's grades in elementary school were not outstanding. In his own words, he "never won a certificate of honor."
Although Liu Wenlong was younger than his classmates, he did not become a focus of attention during his primary school years because he “skipped a grade” during a school transfer. “At that time, neither the teachers nor the classmates paid attention to him.”
I like physics, chemistry and biology, but was once stuck in English
Liu Wenlong was young and was discovered by his teacher during a home visit when he was in junior high school.
"After the teacher found out, he told everyone at school, and then all the classmates knew about it." Liu Wenlong said that after his classmates knew his age, they sometimes teased him for being "childish". "Maybe the toys I play with are more suitable for younger people, such as those squeezing balls for decompression."
During junior high school, Liu Wenlong's grades were generally ranked around 20th in his class. At that stage, his interests gradually emerged. "I particularly like minor subjects, especially biology. Sometimes my biology grades were close to full marks."
But later, he was "stuck" by English. "My Chinese and foreign language scores were average, especially English, which I sometimes couldn't understand." He said that because of his English problem, teachers were worried that he would not be able to go to high school. "My third-year class teacher told me that as long as I could pass English, I could go to high school." In order to go to high school, Liu Wenlong studied English like crazy every day for a while. His English teacher in the fourth year of junior high school suggested that he change to studying Japanese after entering high school.
After actively preparing for the exam, Liu Wenlong successfully passed the junior high school entrance exam and was admitted to Rongcheng No. 2 Middle School. After entering high school, he changed his major to Japanese. After changing his major to Japanese, Liu Wenlong seemed to have suddenly found his way, and foreign languages were no longer a stumbling block for him. "At that time, I could usually get more than 120 points in Japanese." The reporter learned that in this year's college entrance examination, Liu Wenlong scored 126 points in Japanese and 114 points in Chinese.
The scores of the main subjects improved, but the "minor subjects" that Liu Wenlong was proud of - physics, chemistry and biology - did not reach his goal in the college entrance examination, "no subject exceeded 80 points."
"Under normal circumstances, my scores in physics, chemistry and biology were pretty good, better than those in Chinese, math and English. But in the college entrance examination, my scores in Chinese, math and English exceeded those in the daily mock exams, while my scores in physics, chemistry and biology were not as good as usual." He reflected that this might be related to the fact that he spent a lot of time and energy on the main subjects before the college entrance examination. "At that stage, I felt that I had no problem with physics, chemistry and biology, so I put most of my energy into the three main subjects, but I didn't expect to 'sacrifice' physics, chemistry and biology in the end."
My interest in studying medicine started in middle school
After the college entrance examination results were announced, Liu Wenlong decided to major in medicine. As for why he wanted to study medicine, there is an interesting story behind it.
Liu Wenlong told reporters that he had severe allergic symptoms during junior high school and was sent to the hospital. "When the doctor asked me about my symptoms, I told him clearly what I ate and drank before the allergy, what I was doing when I had difficulty breathing, etc. In short, the description was very clear." The fact that a child could describe the course of the disease so clearly aroused the interest of the doctor on duty. "The doctor said, since you, a child, can describe the course of the disease so clearly, are you interested in studying medicine?" Liu Wenlong nodded. He said that later the doctor gave him a lot of popular science knowledge about studying medicine, such as what majors are included in the medical field, which schools are better, etc. "I probably had a preliminary understanding of studying medicine at that time."
Later in his studies, Liu Wenlong was particularly interested in biology and did well in it. When he was choosing subjects in high school, he chose physics, chemistry and biology. It seemed that everything was moving him towards studying medicine.
As for why he chose radiology, Liu Wenlong said that he actually applied for all medical majors that met his score requirements when filling out his application, and he was finally admitted to radiology, which was also a matter of fate. As for the choice of school, "Little Brother" blurted out a sentence - "I just think the name of Shandong First Medical University is more impressive."
After arriving at the school, Shandong First Medical University did not disappoint him. "The school is very large, the buildings are very tall, the campus is very clean, and the dormitory conditions are very good. It meets my imagination of a university."
Ready to endure hardships
Liu Wenlong said that he had heard that studying medicine is very tiring, but he didn't dare to think too much about it for fear of being scared. However, he said that he was ready.
"I've learned from the Internet that studying medicine requires memorizing a lot of books. I've made up my mind that after school starts, I'll go to the classroom to memorize every day, then go to eat, and then memorize again after sleeping..." At this point, "Little Brother" said a little embarrassedly. He later thought that memorizing was only a part of learning, and he hoped that his university life could be more colorful.
"I want to be like in TV dramas, getting up in the morning and strolling to eat with a few friends; going to the playground or park for a walk and chat at night when I don't have to study; and going shopping with classmates during the holidays." In addition, Liu Wenlong also likes reading very much, especially novels.
After all, he is still a child under 15 years old. Liu Wenlong still has habits that suit his age, such as liking to relax with toys and dolls; his phone case is bright yellow, and his phone screen saver is a cute little duck. There is also a duck tail on the phone case that echoes the little duck on the screen saver, which is very cute. He also revealed that he was unable to bring some toys with him this time, and he hopes to bring them to school when he goes home for the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.
When asked about his future plans, Liu Wenlong said that he heard that medical students who want to work in better hospitals need to have a high degree of education, so he is also ready to take the postgraduate entrance examination. He hopes that he can become a good doctor in the future and buy a house after making money, "to support myself and my mother."
