IT Home reported on August 25 that salary data leaked from within Microsoft showed that employees in the company's AI department were paid much more than those in other departments.

According to Business Insider, hundreds of Microsoft employees voluntarily shared their salary and promotion information, including detailed information for more than 500 US employees. The analysis shows that the average salary of Microsoft software engineers ranges from US$148,436 to US$1,230,000, corresponding to job levels from Level 59 to Level 69. Among them, the average total salary of software engineers in the newly established Microsoft AI department is US$377,611 (IT Home Note: Currently about RMB 2.693 million), which is at least US$120,000 higher than the average level of other departments (Azure, Cloud and AI, Experience and Devices).

The unit was formed in March to bolster Microsoft’s consumer AI strategy, including its Copilot AI chatbot and Bing search engine. DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman leads the team.

Although the leaked salary data is not complete information, the salary gap between the AI department and other departments is undeniable. On the one hand, it is understandable that Microsoft is willing to pay high salaries for AI talents. The company obviously believes that AI is the future development direction of the industry, and many technology companies are chasing limited AI talents, which will inevitably push up salary levels.

However, this was not easy to accept for employees in other departments who were responsible for Microsoft's core products but whose colleagues received higher salaries.
