On August 20, 2024, PICO held a new product launch conference and launched the PICO 4 Ultra MR mixed reality all-in-one machine. This product was released about 16 months after PICO's previous product, the PICO 4 Pro.

As the first step of PICO's layout of MR, PICO 4 Ultra has made a number of targeted updates to its hardware, including the second-generation Snapdragon XR2 chip, which uses a 4nm process and has a GPU performance 2.5 times higher than the previous generation. In order to cater to the computing power improvement brought by MR, the built-in memory of PICO 4 Ultra has been increased from 8GB to 12GB.

In terms of vision, the PICO 4 Ultra is equipped with a 90Hz binocular 4K+ resolution screen, with a brightness that is 25% higher than the previous generation. Based on the support of the Snapdragon XR2 platform performance, the actual picture rendering resolution reaches 1920×1920, an increase of 62% compared to PICO4.

Compared with Mate's latest Quest 3, PICO 4 Ultra has more advantages in body memory, battery capacity and overall body weight.

With the launch of Apple Vision Pro in China in June 2024, the virtual reality market has once again returned to the public's attention, and the new products released by PICO this time are also aimed at the MR mixed augmented reality track. However, compared with the traditional 3C digital field, the overall market size of the virtual reality industry is too small, which is still a problem that all manufacturers involved need to face.

According to the "AR/VR Headset Market Quarterly Tracking Report" released by IDC in the middle of this year, China's AR/VR headset shipments in the first quarter of 2024 were 107,000 units, a year-on-year decline of 37.8%. Among them, VR shipments were 22,000 units, a year-on-year decline of 72.6%; MR shipments were 34,000 units, a year-on-year decline of 52.7%; although AR shipments increased by 119.2% year-on-year, the base was not large, only 8,000 units.

After being acquired by ByteDance, PICO gained great attention with the release of PICO 4, but the growth in shipments has always been the biggest pressure on virtual reality equipment manufacturers. In 2023 alone, PICO experienced two layoffs.

The head-mounted display device market is growing sluggishly. The biggest flaw is the lack of a content ecosystem. It is difficult for virtual reality hardware device shipments to scale, making it difficult for content producers and software developers to continuously produce high-quality content.

At this conference, PICO released a new version of Pico OS to solve the problem of corresponding software ecology. It can achieve full compatibility with Android apps and support multi-modal interaction, including handles, gestures, and keyboard and mouse. Users can also use Windows, MAC, and mobile phones on the workbench. Like Apple, PICO also hopes to expand the scope of application of virtual reality products through productivity.

According to official information, the PICO 4 Ultra enterprise version is priced at 7,499 yuan, and the PICO 4 Ultra consumer version is priced at 4,299 yuan.
