Not long ago, Xu Zhongping, an old painter in his seventies, said in front of Wo Xinghua, Chen Zhenlian and Qiu Zhenzhong at an academic discussion that we should not show off our skills and should not pay too much attention to form. He also pointed out that the biggest harm to calligraphy now is those "experts" who have led calligraphy astray. Qiu Zhenzhong was really embarrassed by such sharp criticism!

Xu Zhongping said, I will tell you with my painful experience of more than 70 years. Since the early 1980s, I have believed that calligraphy should be individual and have its own personality, and I have been pursuing it. I went to Youshou, and Youshou sorted it out for me and said that you wrote well, well. Not long after, my fantasy came back, and she criticized me. At that time, I thought the old gentleman was very old-fashioned and said that our young generation should be creative, so I didn't go.

Now that I am older, I understand that what I have gained in the past thirty or forty years is nothing but a pile of dead branches and rotten leaves. I have nothing! If I cannot stay here, it means that I have no knowledge and no real in-depth understanding of traditional culture. How can I call myself a calligrapher? Why do you think that my good handwriting is worth showing off?

We can take one of Van Gogh's shoes and hang it in the most conspicuous place in the house. This is not a pair of shoes, but Van Gogh's soul and everything he has. If we hold a note from Yan Zhenqing and Du Fu in our hands, what do you think will happen? This is why, at the 20th Century Art Exhibition, I looked at thousands of paintings, but only found a painting by Master Hongyi that was less than two meters square, and a couplet by Xie Wuliang.

There is a power in their works that can pierce through people's bodies. Therefore, the shallowness and depth of life will leave some traces in the years to come. If everyone does all kinds of training courses and training courses like the art academy, what harm will there be? It seems that everyone who enters the academy must become a calligrapher. Do you know what's going on?

In our time, people pursue fame, fortune, popularity, and dazzling things, but they don’t know that life has an end, and they only regret it when the glamour fades away.

Xu Zhongping said, I think calligraphy should not be too fancy, nor should it focus too much on form. For example, Wo Xinghua’s discussion of his formal structure has caused great damage to our current calligraphy, not to mention “masters” such as Chen Zhenlian and Qiu Zhenzhong!

These two people have embarked on the evil path of calligraphy. Have you also learned some theories? Did Master Hongyi study calligraphy? Have you learned this thickness theory? Can Japanese Ryokan understand you? Why do children today like theories? Can you pass the postgraduate entrance examination? He can make more money! He will get this title! For fame and money, a generation of Chinese calligraphers have become street vendors!

In response to Xu Zhongping's aggressive words, Qiu Zhenzhong could only stammer and said somewhat embarrassedly: "To be honest, at this point, I really want to say something, but I never have the chance. What is he talking about? How did I transform from a motivated literati into a calligrapher? Why did I leave for forty years? What I mean is that I have no interest in calligraphy at all!"

Xu Zhongping's remarks were completely questioning the chaos in the calligraphy world today. Qiu Zhenzhong's hesitant answer seemed to be hinting at something, yet also seemed to be avoiding something.
