According to Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, August 19, UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement through his spokesman Stephane Dujarric on the 19th, demanding that the Yemeni Houthi armed forces immediately and unconditionally release the UN staff and other personnel detained by them.

The statement said that many staff members from the United Nations, government departments, non-governmental organizations, diplomatic missions and civil society have been detained by the Houthis for more than two months. Guterres expressed deep concern about their situation and demanded that the Houthis release them immediately and unconditionally. Guterres also strongly condemned the Houthis' recent forced entry into the office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen. The statement added that the Houthis had returned the office to the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen on the 19th.

The statement said that the current humanitarian situation in Yemen is very serious. The United Nations is working hard to address the impact of the serious situation on the Yemeni people, but the safety of UN staff must be ensured. UN staff and their partners should never be targeted, arrested or detained while performing their duties.

It is reported that the Houthis arrested more than 50 staff and rescue workers from the United Nations, international organizations and non-governmental organizations in Sana'a in early June. In early August, the office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Sana'a was forcibly closed by the Houthis.
