U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on the 18th and will carry out intensive diplomatic mediation in the Middle East in the next few days to bridge the differences between the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Israel on the Gaza ceasefire, hoping to promote a ceasefire agreement.

However, Israel and Hamas accused each other of obstructing a ceasefire agreement, but US President Biden still said a ceasefire was still possible and hoped to reach an agreement this week. Coincidentally, Biden's Democratic Party held its national convention this week to nominate presidential candidates. Anti-war demonstrations have cast a shadow over the convention, and analysts say the Biden administration is in urgent need of "mediating" the Gaza war to score points for the Democratic Party in the election.

Blinken's ninth trip to the Middle East

This is Blinken's ninth visit to the Middle East for mediation since the outbreak of a new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict on October 7 last year.

According to the New York Times, the current situation in the Middle East is tense and the risk of regional conflict expansion is imminent. Biden said that the reason he sent Blinken to visit the Middle East this time was, on the one hand, to continue intensive diplomatic mediation to promote a ceasefire agreement, and on the other hand, to "emphasize that an agreement on a comprehensive ceasefire and the release of detained persons is in sight, and all parties in the Middle East must not take actions to undermine this process."

The Gaza ceasefire talks resumed in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on the 15th and ended on the 16th. The participants included officials from Israel, Qatar, the United States and Egypt, but Hamas was absent. Subsequently, US negotiators proposed a new ceasefire plan to Hamas and Israel to bridge the differences.
