August 19 is the seventh Chinese Doctors' Day. Currently, the Chinese Navy Peace Ark hospital ship is on its way to South Africa. The officers and soldiers will welcome this special holiday on the glorious journey of carrying out the "Harmonious Mission-2024" mission.
On August 12, Chinese military doctors performed surgery on the Peace Ark hospital ship during its visit to Mozambique. Xinhua News Agency
Since setting sail from Zhoushan on June 16, the Peace Ark hospital ship has visited Seychelles, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mozambique. In these four countries, the officers and soldiers of the hospital ship put into practice the spirit of "respecting life, saving the dying and the wounded, being willing to make sacrifices and loving without boundaries" with practical actions, winning unanimous praise from local governments and people.
"I can finally see with my left eye. I am so lucky to have met you!" Santos held the hand of Dr. Gao Yu and thanked her repeatedly in the ophthalmology clinic of the hospital ship. Santos, who is from Mozambique, is an excavator driver. His income is the only source of income for his family. However, cataracts have made his eyesight worse and worse. He is very worried about losing his job because he cannot afford the high cost of treatment.
On the Peace Ark hospital ship, Santos not only received free treatment, but also received medicines that helped his recovery. During the one-week visit to Mozambique, the hospital ship provided medical services to more than 7,300 people and performed 74 cataract surgeries, bringing light not only to many patients like Santos, but also to many local people, bringing health and hope to their lives.
The same story happened in Tanzania. Tanzania is the second stop of the hospital ship's "Harmony Mission-2024" mission. To this day, orthopedic surgeon Yang Jun is still impressed by the patient Michael's eyes that yearn for health. Michael is 21 years old, but has been suffering from the disease for more than 10 years. Because of scoliosis, he not only has difficulty walking, but even his normal breathing is seriously affected.
During the operation on Michael, Yang Jun was very careful with every detail. Yang Jun knew that what he was correcting and reshaping was not only the curved spine, but also the future of a young man. After more than 7 hours of hard work, the operation was successfully completed. After leaving the operating room, Yang Jun said with deep emotion: "I feel very proud to have traveled across the ocean to fulfill the noble mission of saving lives and healing the wounded."
The benevolence of doctors transcends mountains and seas; the bridge of friendship continues to grow stronger. The Peace Ark hospital ship is about to arrive in South Africa. Chinese military doctors will continue to treat every patient with benevolence and protect every life with superb medical skills.
