"From Chengdu to Shanghai, and then to Beijing, I have walked this road for 20 years." Singer Zhang Jie (pictured) recently held a concert at the Beijing Bird's Nest, with a record of eight consecutive performances and a 75-meter-long stage, giving fans a feast for the ears. From Los Angeles, Vancouver, New York, to Kuala Lumpur and Sydney, Zhang Jie became the first mainland singer to perform at the Dolby Theater, the venue of the Oscars, and the first mainland "post-80s" singer to hold a solo concert at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. "The language barrier is actually not that important. If you sing it out, everyone will understand what you want to express." Zhang Jie said in an exclusive interview with the Global Times recently.
"I am really lucky." Starting from July 16, 2016 at the Beijing Workers' Stadium, Zhang Jie's world tour lasted 498 days, spanning four continents, seven countries, 25 cities, and held 25 performances with more than 250,000 viewers. In addition, he also collaborated with Canadian singer Vanshia in "Singer 2024".
"She has great energy at a young age and sings Chinese songs beautifully. It is obvious that she loves Chinese culture very much and likes to communicate with Chinese fans through music. This state is very consistent with me." Speaking of the cooperation with Vanxia, Zhang Jie revealed, "When I met her for the first time during the rehearsal, we exchanged a lot of feelings about each other in English. I recommended her to sing "Shallow" and felt that it was very suitable for her. Later, we still didn't sing enough, so I invited her to my Bird's Nest concert as a guest. She also felt that this was a perfect trip to China."
During the world tour, Zhang Jie sang "Felicita" with Italian legendary singer Abano. This collaboration allowed Chinese and Western music cultures to meet on stage. Zhang Jie mentioned that Abano even agreed to let him sing the song in Chinese in the future, so that more people can feel the friendship between China and Italy. Previously, Zhang Jie also collaborated with the American rock band X Ambassadors to sing "Torches", the ending song of "Transformers 5: The Last Knight" in China. Zhang Jie revealed that at a private celebration party, director Michael Bay suggested to post their photo at around 2 a.m. when chatting with him, to see how many people in China were still awake. Zhang Jie smiled and replied: "Yes, they are all watching "Transformers 5" in the cinema at this moment." When talking about cooperation with international musicians and film projects, Zhang Jie admitted that as a musician from China, the sincere heart to want to integrate and exchange cultures is very important. "First of all, my English has indeed improved. Secondly, I understand more about the power of music without borders. This integration brings each other closer."
From studying music abroad in 2013 to exchanging music with producers during his tours around the world, Zhang Jie discovered that people around the world are full of interest in the long-standing Chinese culture contained in Chinese music, as well as pop music played with traditional Chinese instruments. "This has strengthened my determination to continue to mix pop music in the future. I believe that Chinese music will be liked by more people in the future, and I want to work hard with more Chinese people. My wish is that my music will be there wherever there are Chinese people." Zhang Jie said. ▲#Deep Good Articles Project#
