[Global Times Report] According to AFP, Reuters and other media reports, on August 18 local time, Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn formally approved Petunthan Shinawatra as prime minister. After accepting the written order, Petunthan spoke out and said that he would cooperate with the lawmakers with an open mind.

According to AFP, at around 9:30 a.m. local time, at a ceremony held in Bangkok, Petunthan received a written order from the King of Thailand to form a government.

Reuters said that Apa Sukanam, secretary general of the lower house of the Thai parliament, read out the king's decree at the ceremony, while Petunthan knelt in front of the portrait of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The report said that Petunthan also delivered a brief speech to thank the Thai king and the representatives of the Thai people.

"As the head of the executive branch, I will work with the legislators with an open mind to perform my duties," Petuntan said in a speech. "I will listen to the opinions of all parties so that we can work together to promote the stability and development of the country."

Reuters said that Petuntan's 75-year-old father Thaksin was an important figure at the ceremony. He stood in the front row with Petuntan's husband. The scene showed that Petuntan hugged his father Thaksin before and during the ceremony.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the Thai government's gazette website published a royal decree on the 17th, announcing the pardon of three categories of prisoners on the occasion of the king's 72nd birthday, which will take effect on August 18. Win Ya, the lawyer of former Prime Minister Thaksin, later confirmed that Thaksin, who is currently on parole, is among the pardoned.
