On July 14, the "Art and Dream Building" practice group of Hyde College of Hainan University officially set off for Xinglong Overseas Chinese Tourism Economic Zone in Wanning City to carry out a ten-day summer social practice and Xinglong teaching activity.
As the activity was about to end, in the multimedia classroom on the fourth floor of Xinglong Central School, the children reluctantly said goodbye to the members of the practice group. The scene was moving.
"Teacher, can you please not leave?" "Teacher, I will miss you." "Teacher, will you come next year?" On July 22, the children of Xinglong Central School came to school early as usual, but this time they came to see off their "big friends".

Relying on professional characteristics, art lights up the heart
It is only 168 kilometers from Haikou to Xinglong, but the bus took three hours with frequent stops and starts.
The sun was shining brightly when we set out, but it suddenly became cloudy when we were about to arrive in Xinglong. A few flashes of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by rumbling thunder, and large raindrops hit the car windows. The rain showed no sign of stopping, but instead got heavier. However, this sudden rainstorm did not affect the good mood of the practice group members.
"China's Southeast Asian Style Town", "Hot Spring Town", "China's No. 1 Coffee Town"... Even though it was raining heavily outside the bus window, you could still see the propaganda slogans flashing outside the window. Inside the bus, the members of the practice group exclaimed in amazement while discussing how to better inherit and promote the local cultural characteristics.
Wang Xijie, an undergraduate student majoring in painting at Hyde College, looked at the Li brocade clothing patterns outside the car window and said: "Li brocade is not only a cultural treasure of Hainan, but also carries rich historical memories and national spirit. We can combine our professional advantages to let more children understand the Li culture and Li brocade intangible cultural heritage by conducting Li brocade painting courses."

"Xinglong coffee is a local specialty. We can first investigate the more well-known local coffee industrial parks, and then give the children more detailed explanations to inspire their love and identification with Xinglong coffee." Duan Jiyuan, an undergraduate student majoring in painting at Hyde College, added.
It is reported that Hainan University's college system reform brings together students from different majors and grades to provide a diverse volunteer service team for social practice activities, allowing volunteers from different fields to give full play to their expertise.
More than 10 members of the "Art Color Dream Building" practice group come from different majors of Hyde College, including art design, painting, ideology and politics, visual communication design, journalism and communication, etc. They have reached a consensus, organically integrated local cultural resources with their own professional characteristics, and jointly promoted the in-depth and practical volunteer service work, helping children discover the beauty of the nation and ecology around them and enhance their cultural confidence.
"The 'Art Dream Building' practice group has divided the subject areas according to the requirements of the new curriculum standards, combined with the characteristics of the grade groups of students of appropriate age, integrated the regional characteristics of Hainan and the local characteristics of Xinglong, Wanning, tapped into its own professional advantages, lit up the lamps of artistic dreams for local students, and contributed to the inheritance of local culture." Lu Yiru, deputy director (deputy secretary) of the Student Affairs Office (Youth League Committee) of Hyde Academy, introduced.
The road of teaching in the wind and rain, the road of perseverance
Facing the brand new land of Xinglong, the volunteers who are embarking on their first teaching journey are faced with many obstacles.
"Teaching in rural areas is not only a wish and a sentiment, but also an honor and responsibility, and a process of overcoming difficulties. We must overcome every difficulty and keep moving forward to stick to our original intention of teaching and educating people." Xu Hexuan, a graduate student in art design at Hyde College, summarized the difficulties encountered in the process of teaching in rural areas into three major difficulties: ideological hurdles, life hurdles, and work hurdles.
The first problem that volunteers face is the change of individual identity from student to teacher. Chen Huiwen, a graduate student of Hyde Academy’s art design program, said: “I am still a little uncomfortable with the change from student to teacher. The first time I taught painting knowledge to primary school students, I was very nervous because I was afraid that the children would not like the content I prepared. But later, I clearly realized the burden on my shoulders, and I felt more satisfied and calm.”
During the teaching period, Xinglong was in the rainy season. Although the volunteers had made work plans in advance, the test of nature is always unexpected. "The sudden rainstorm at noon soaked our clothes and shoes, but in order to welcome the students on time, we wrung out our clothes and then taught the students in wet clothes and shoes. After the class, the clothes and shoes were still soaked with water." said Zhu Hao, a graduate student of Hyde College's art design major.
Without the leisure and comfort of the past, the volunteers devoted themselves to teaching, striving to complete every class with high quality. Cheng Zhiyuan, an undergraduate student majoring in painting at Hyde Academy, said: "Completing every class with high quality has become our biggest challenge. Non-stop preparation and teaching have long been the norm for every volunteer teacher. In places where the children cannot see, we are warriors holding paper and pen, racing against time and fighting against the darkness."
Through one challenge after another, the volunteers have gone from being confused and naive at the beginning to being able to cope with things with ease now. While gaining a new self, they have also won the students' reluctance to leave and their love.
Zhang Xinyue, a fourth-grade student at Xinglong Central School, said: "I like every volunteer teacher. They not only taught me knowledge, but also made me feel the joy and warmth of learning with their patience and care. Their smiles and words illuminate my way forward like sunshine."
Engage in colorful practice and write a brilliant chapter of youth
In the prosperous morning light and dusk, the members of the "Art and Dream Building" practice group use their hearts as pens and their emotions as ink to gently sketch and carefully render the picture of practice.
They lead the children to print the textures of tropical plants on the canvas, making the beauty of nature come alive on paper; they flip them with their deft hands, allowing the children to learn to give new life to waste items, shining the light of creativity in turning waste into treasure; they look up at the stars, cherishing the dream of space travel, and use the key of knowledge to open the door to the universe for the children; they go deep into the hometown of overseas Chinese, explore the context of culture, and let the unique charm of the hometown culture take root in the hearts of children; in the loud singing, they sing the main theme of patriotism, letting patriotic feelings stir in the hearts of children.
In addition, the members also used their spare time after teaching to conduct field research. Through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, on-site observations and other methods, they widely collected first-hand information and gained an in-depth understanding of the historical origins and development of local coffee culture and overseas Chinese culture, so that more people can understand the fruitful results achieved by Xinglong in the process of building a beautiful countryside.
They stepped into the Xinglong Coffee and Charoen Pokphand Industrial Park and had face-to-face exchanges with Huang Haiwen, a member of the National People's Congress and logistics director of Charoen Pokphand (Hainan) Xinglong Coffee Industry Development Co., Ltd. While learning about the history of Xinglong Coffee from an overseas Chinese farm coffee factory to a modern industrial park, they also personally experienced the wonderful transformation process from coffee beans to fragrant coffee.
Arriving at Isana Indonesian Restaurant, the members of the practice group talked with Du Tianjiang, former president of Xinglong Indonesian Overseas Chinese Association and founder of Isana Indonesian Restaurant. Du Tianjiang, with his personal experience and profound insights, revealed to the members of the practice group the historical changes of Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm and the struggles of the returned overseas Chinese, inspiring their infinite emotion and deep thinking.
In remote corners, the members of the practice group hope to light up the beacon of knowledge to illuminate the children's way forward; in the research fields, the members dig deep into the profound connotations behind the culture and contribute their own strength to social progress.
"In the future, the 'Art and Dream Building' practice group will continue to uphold its original aspirations, be brave in taking on responsibilities, and interpret the responsibilities and missions of young people with practical actions," said Xu Hexuan.
