Recently, a netizen posted a video reporting that instructors at the Xinbashu Special Training School in Xindu District, Chengdu, beat up trainees, and some people pretended to be police officers from the police station. A former trainee told reporters that the beatings and corporal punishments reported online did happen, and that school staff also claimed to be police officers when they came to pick them up.

On August 16, Jimu News reporters went to the school and found that people were entering and leaving the school normally, and some parents were picking up their children. Regarding the beating incident reported by netizens, the school leaders and staff declined to be interviewed and denied "impersonating the police."

As of now, the official website and short video account of the special training school involved are not visible, and all the tweets of the official account have been hidden or deleted. Many departments including the Xindu District Police and the Education Bureau have intervened in the investigation.

Netizen claims to have been beaten by school instructor

A netizen posted a video saying that he had investigated the Xin Bashu Special Training School in Chengdu, Sichuan, and was taken to the school by school staff pretending to be police officers. He was also beaten by the school instructor, and many other students in the school were also beaten and severely punished. The netizen posted a video of his legs with scars, saying that he was beaten by the instructor, but he did not post the process of the beating.

In the video, the netizen stated that he would bear legal responsibility for the authenticity of the video. The reporter tried to contact the publisher, but no clear response was received as of press time.

Public information including the official website of Sichuan Xinbashu Special Training School (hereinafter referred to as Xinbashu) shows that the school is located at No. 56, Gaozuchang South Street, Juntun Town, Xindu District, Chengdu City. According to a tweet posted on the school's official account in 2024, the school provides psychological counseling, military training, gratitude education, behavioral correction, and ideological education for people with bad habits such as premature love, addiction to games, aversion to school, rebellion, laziness, indifference to family affection, running away from home, and poor self-control. The students are managed in a fully closed military manner, and their bad habits are changed through targeted and systematic training. The fees vary according to the training time, 29,800 yuan for half a year, 45,800 yuan for a year, 21,800 yuan for three months, and 8,800 yuan for a month. The school also promises transparent teaching, no beatings or corporal punishment of students in disguise, and video recordings can be sent to the parent group at any time to ensure personal safety.

On August 16, Jimu News reporters noticed that the official website of Xinbashu was still accessible in the morning, but became abnormal in the afternoon, with the webpage showing "under construction". On the 17th, the school's official account had cleared its tweets, its short video account was set to private, and no one answered the school's multiple public telephones.

In response to an interview with Jimu News reporters, staff from shareholder Zhongsu International Education Consulting Group said that the company and Xinbashu only had an enrollment relationship and they were unclear about the matters exposed online.

Xindu District police told reporters that the local area has launched an investigation, with multiple departments including the police and the Education Bureau involved. A staff member of the Xindu District Education Bureau said that the bureau has paid attention to the matter and is currently assisting in the investigation and handling.

Past students said that "school staff claimed to be police officers"

Yue Yue (pseudonym), a former student of Xin Bashu, told Jimu News that he was sent to Xin Bashu by his parents because he suffered from depression and often quarreled with his parents. He was first taken to the psychological counseling room on campus, where the staff recorded a video to force him to admit his mistakes. He stayed there for nearly half a year, saw his parents only a few times, and even wanted to leave school early.

Yue Yue said that the situation of the students in the school is quite complicated. Some are rebellious and hate studying, and some suffer from mental illness. He has also seen adult students. During the training, the instructors often beat the students, and there is also a punishment method of "one person makes a mistake and everyone is punished."

Yue Yue said that the overall atmosphere in the school was quite depressing and that this experience had caused him great psychological trauma. "In order to reassure parents, the school leaders stipulated that instructors were not allowed to beat students, but they turned a blind eye as long as the parents didn't know about it."

Another student said that he had a similar experience, and the beatings and corporal punishments that were circulated online did exist. He was picked up at his home, and the school staff claimed to be the police. He was one of the earlier students to enter the school, and he had the impression that the instructors liked to beat people. After graduating and leaving the school, he dared to tell his parents the truth about the beatings.

The courses published by the school show that students get up at 6:20 every day from Monday to Friday, then tidy up their rooms, do morning exercises and read, and eat breakfast; at 8:30 they start behavioral morning meetings, queue training, and behavioral norms; after lunch break, they take courses such as interest cultivation, psychological group counseling, Chinese culture gratitude, civilized etiquette, and legal education; after dinner, they participate in extracurricular activities, watch the news, and learn the "Rules for Being a Good Pupil and Child".

When reporters visited the school, they denied "impersonating police officers"

On August 16, Jimu News reporters came to the address of the school promoted by Xin Bashu, No. 56, Gaozuchang South Street, Juntun Town, Xindu District, Chengdu City, which is located deep in the township. There is no Xin Bashu sign in front of the gate, but a sign that says "Stars Education Training Base". The bulletin board in the courtyard reads "Sichuan Xin Bashu Youth Quality Education". Scanning the QR code will bring up the introduction advertisement of Xin Bashu. According to a man who entered the school, this is the Xin Bashu Special Training School.

The reporter noticed that people were coming and going normally in the school, some parents were picking up their children, and some were driving to the school to do business. When the reporter asked the parents who came to the school about the issues exposed online, they did not respond directly, but only said that the students' training was over today and they were ready to leave the school.

The person in charge and staff of Xin Bashu declined to be interviewed by the reporter. When the reporter asked about the "school staff being exposed as police officers", the person in charge of the school said "how is it possible", and then hurriedly returned to close the school gate and did not respond.

Tianyancha shows that Sichuan Xinbashu Outward Bound Training Co., Ltd. also has a Sichuan Zhongxing Education Consulting Group Co., Ltd. under its shareholder name, and the two companies have the same registered address. On the 16th, staff from the People's Government of Juntun Town, Xindu District, said that the "Zhongxing Education Training Base" and "Xinbashu" are the same company, and the special training school involved is currently cooperating with the investigation. The beating incident reported by netizens is still under investigation, and the school's operating status is not clear for the time being.
