Recently, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser revealed to the media that the German Ministry of the Interior is planning to tighten the "knife ban". The new regulations will completely ban switchblades, and reduce the length of knife blades allowed in public places from 12 cm to 6 cm. The exception only includes household knives that are purchased in sealed packaging. Feser also called on the federal states to set up more "knife-free zones" in which the police have the power to search people's personal belongings and deal with them quickly. The German Police Union also believes that the existing "Weapons Law" is not strong enough, and even called for a complete ban on carrying knives in public places.
According to current German regulations, folding knives that can be used with one hand and non-folding knives with blades longer than 12 cm cannot be carried outside. Violators may be sentenced to up to three years in prison. Some cities have set up "knife-free zones", such as Hamburg Central Station and Cologne's Old Town. However, the above measures have not been able to curb the trend of increasing knife crimes in Germany in recent years.
Since the beginning of this year, knife attacks have occurred frequently in Germany, bringing great pressure to public security. German media said that knife attacks now occur almost every weekend in Germany. According to statistics from the German police, there were about 4,000 knife attacks in the first half of this year, an increase of 10% compared with the same period in 2023. Most of the cases occurred in public places, including train stations and city center areas, and there were some vicious cases that caused deaths. In April, a knife attack in the city of Duisburg resulted in one death and three injuries. The perpetrator claimed to be a member of the "Islamic State" terrorist organization; in May, an Afghan refugee in Mannheim attacked several people with a knife at a right-wing anti-Islamic rally, resulting in one death and five injuries. The suspect was shot and subdued by the police on the spot.
