▲Phai Thongdan Shinawatra, leader of the Pheu Thai Party
According to CCTV News, on August 16, local time, the House of Representatives of the Thai Parliament held a meeting to vote on the candidate for prime minister. Prime Minister candidate and Pheu Thai Party leader Padongdan Shinawatra won the support of more than half of the members of the House of Representatives and was elected as the new prime minister.
According to the Thai constitution, a candidate for prime minister must win the support of more than half of the 493 seats in the lower house of parliament. Currently, the 11-party ruling coalition led by the Pheu Thai Party holds 314 of them.
On the 14th of this month, the Constitutional Court of Thailand ruled that Prime Minister Setha had violated the constitution and removed him from his post as prime minister with immediate effect. On the 15th, the ruling coalition agreed to nominate Pheu Thai Party leader Patondan Shinawatra as the prime ministerial candidate.
Born in 1986, Pattondan is the daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the current leader of the Pheu Thai Party. After being elected, Pattondan will become the second female prime minister in Thai history and the youngest prime minister.
