The much-watched "mentally retarded man robbery case" has seen new progress after the defendant Li Siqiang was acquitted: A Beijing News reporter learned on August 15 that the original trial court, the Longhu District People's Court of Shantou City, Guangdong Province, has made a state compensation decision on the case, paying more than 2.34 million yuan in compensation to Li Siqiang's relatives.

Because he was carrying the ID card of Liu Xiwen, a suspect in a robbery case, the mentally disabled Li Siqiang was sentenced to prison for robbery. Li Siqiang died of illness shortly after being released from prison, but his brother Li Kuixing continued to appeal for him for many years. On April 18 this year, the Xiangqiao District Court of Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province, changed Li Siqiang's verdict to not guilty.

Li Siqiang was seriously ill and died two months after his release from prison.

The state compensation decision issued by the Longhu District Court mentioned that Li Siqiang was detained on March 26, 2007 and released on June 25, 2016, with a total detention of 3,380 days. According to the national average daily wage of employees in the previous year of 462.44 yuan, he should pay 1,563,047.2 yuan in compensation for infringement of personal freedom (3,380 days x 462.44 yuan/day), and the mental damage consolation money should be determined according to 50% of the total amount of personal freedom compensation, which is 781,523.6 yuan. The two items total more than 2.34 million yuan.
