China News Service, August 15: "The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is related to the overall strategic situation, long-term development and people's well-being. Protecting the ecological environment of the water source and ensuring that 'clear water flows north sustainably' requires everyone to fulfill their responsibilities and work hard for a long time."
August 15th this year is the second National Ecological Day. Recently, General Secretary Xi Jinping wrote back to environmental volunteers in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area of Shiyan, Hubei, emphasizing the special significance of ecological environmental protection for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.
The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is the world's largest water diversion project to date. It is a major strategic infrastructure aimed at solving China's water resource distribution problem of "shortage in the north and abundance in the south". Xi Jinping once called it "a major national event, a project of the century, and a project that wins the hearts of the people."
At the end of 2014, the first phase of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's East and Middle Lines were fully put into operation. By March 2024, the project's cumulative water diversion volume exceeded 70 billion cubic meters, benefiting seven provinces and cities along the route, and directly benefiting more than 176 million people.
The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is related to the drinking water and water use of hundreds of millions of people. Xi Jinping has repeatedly used the term "lifeline" to describe the importance of this project, emphasizing the need to safeguard the safety of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, water supply safety, and water quality safety from the political height of protecting the lifeline.
