According to a report by Reference News on August 7, the Taiwan authorities have completed the preparation of the general budget for 2025. In this budget, the total defense budget (including funds and special budgets) reached NT$647 billion, a record high.
In addition, the annual budget revenue and expenditure both exceeded NT$3 trillion, setting a new record. In response, Taiwan TVBS News reported on August 6 that due to the peak payment period for military purchases from the United States, the resumption of compulsory military service and a significant increase in personnel expenses, the overall amount of defense in the annual budget compiled by the Lai Ching-te administration for the first time is expected to reach NT$630 billion.
Recently, Ma Ying-jeou, the former leader of Taiwan, once again expressed his views on the cross-strait peace issue while attending an event. He pointed out that the United States would not sacrifice its own children for the sake of Taiwan, China. If a conflict breaks out between the two sides, the casualties will be the Chinese on both sides. In particular, if military procurement becomes what Trump calls "protection fees", which is not only absurd but also contemptuous, then Taiwan's defense budget will become a "money pit bill" that will eventually bring down Taiwan and will only benefit the US military-industrial complex.
According to Taiwanese media reports, Ma Ying-jeou said that cross-strait relations have begun to deteriorate since he stepped down in 2016. After the Democratic Progressive Party came to power, it refused to accept the "1992 Consensus", the common political foundation of the two sides of the strait, which put the two sides in a dangerous situation of lack of mutual trust and no formal communication channels.
