August 15, 2024 is the 79th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender. 79 years ago, after 14 years of arduous struggle against the Japanese invaders, the Chinese people achieved the first complete victory in China's resistance against foreign invasion in modern times. This day was hard-won and will be remembered forever by hundreds of millions of Chinese people.
On the morning of August 15, the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders held a themed educational activity to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender on August 15 at the scene restoration site of the "Three Must-Win" exhibition hall, "Venue for the Japanese Surrender Signing Ceremony in the Chinese Theater". 30 people, including descendants of Nanjing Massacre survivors, youth student representatives, and university student volunteer representatives, attended the event.
At 9 a.m., the theme education began with the solemn national anthem. All participants stood up and sang the national anthem of the People's Republic of China.
The exterior of the Central Army Headquarters Auditorium, where the surrender ceremony was held in Nanjing, has been restored at a 1:1 ratio. In front of the auditorium, an array of 891 characters of the "Book of Surrender" are displayed in three dimensions, showing an important historical moment in all aspects.
The flags of the 47 Allied nations that came to Nanjing to attend the surrender ceremony were hung above the scene. Surrounding them were exhibits of captured Japanese weapons and equipment, as well as statues of Japanese officers and soldiers in uniform lining up to surrender.
All the staff watched the film “Countdown to Surrender”, which selected the Japanese surrender signing ceremony in the China Theater held in Nanjing on September 9, 1945, as well as important events and time nodes in the previous 50 days when the world urged Japan to surrender.
"In the Gaoyou Campaign, our troops captured 891 people including Colonel Iwasaki of the 90th Brigade of Japan, and 3,493 people including the commander of the puppet 42nd Division, Wang Hemin. We also seized 61 artillery pieces and more than 4,000 guns. Our record was the best in the Central China War of Resistance..." At the event, Chen Zihan, a youth representative from Gulou Experimental Primary School, recited and preached "Gaoyou: The Last Battle".
Chen Zihan said: "Standing here today to give a speech, I have seen the sufferings of our motherland in the past, and I have a better understanding of the historical responsibility and duty of a Young Pioneer. At the same time, I feel very proud because our country is becoming stronger and stronger and will never be bullied by foreign enemies again. The heroic deeds of our ancestors will always inspire me to overcome all difficulties and obstacles, study hard, and do my part to make our country prosperous and strong."
"648 bright red handprints, gushing with the surging blood of the veterans..." Zhang Ruchu, a youth representative from Nanjing Kerui Primary School, recited and preached "Handprints of Anti-Japanese War Veterans".
Zhang Ruochu is 8 years old and will be promoted to the third grade of primary school in September. She said: "Our country has gone from poverty to prosperity, and many martyrs have sacrificed their lives along the way. We must inherit the spirit of the War of Resistance, study hard, and build a better motherland."
Li Yuhan, the great-grandson of Xia Shuqin, the inheritor of the historical memory of the Nanjing Massacre and a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre, also came to the event. He had listened to his great-grandmother Xia Shuqin telling family stories since he was a child, and joined the volunteer team of the memorial hall to tell more and more people about the history of the Nanjing Massacre. On August 15, 2022, Li Yuhan officially received the certificate of "Inheritor of the Historical Memory of the Nanjing Massacre" from Xia Shuqin. He said: "The painful history must not be forgotten. As a descendant of the survivors, I have the responsibility and obligation to shoulder the important task of inheriting the historical memory of the Nanjing Massacre and spreading the historical truth."
At the end of the event, all participants came to the handprint wall of veterans of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in the rear hall and pressed their own handprints and signed on the huge "V"-shaped theme display board representing victory. These handprints together formed a large "V" shape, encouraging everyone to carry forward the spirit of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and strive to become new people of the times.
