A 30-minute high-speed rail ride from downtown Chongqing will take you to Rongchang District, a city area in Chongqing that exists like a clear stream. It is the birthplace of An Tao, one of the four famous Chinese pottery. There is a beautiful Wanling Ancient Town in the area. Unlike most of Chongqing’s urban areas built along the mountains and close to the Yangtze River, Rongchang is less rugged and magnificent, but more comfortable and gentle, with a bit of the charm of Jiangnan.
Wanling Ancient Town
Wanling Ancient Town was first built in the Southern Song Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,000 years. Chongqing locals are probably more familiar with its past name: Lukong Ancient Town. However, the name Wanling appeared before Lukong and was used for more than 400 years. Therefore, a few years ago, Lukong Ancient Town changed its name and returned to the original "Wanling".
The emerald green Lesixi River flows through the ancient town. The river is wide and tranquil, more like a lake. Visitors can go boating on the river, explore the ten-mile bamboo sea, feel the breeze, or admire the ancient town's city walls and ancient bridges from the water. It has a unique charm of the Jiangnan water town.
