According to media reports on August 13, Apple plans to use its own 5G baseband chip for the first time in the iPhone 17 series to be launched in 2025.
This move is expected to significantly reduce Apple's dependence on Qualcomm, resulting in Qualcomm's revenue from Apple decreasing by 35% year-on-year in 2025 and a further 35% in 2026.
Since Apple acquired Intel's smartphone baseband chip business for US$1 billion in 2019, the market has been looking forward to the launch of Apple's self-developed 5G baseband.
However, from the actual situation, Apple's research and development is not going smoothly. At least this year's new iPhone 16 series will still not be equipped with self-developed 5G baseband chips. Perhaps only a few models of the iPhone 17 series will be equipped with it.
Analyst Chris Caso pointed out that although only a few models in the iPhone 17 series will be equipped with self-developed 5G baseband in the initial stage, this marks that Apple is further breaking away from its dependence on external suppliers in key technologies.
In addition, new iPhones sold by US telecom operators are expected to still be equipped with Qualcomm 5G baseband chips to ensure compatibility with the mainstream US 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands.
