Potato ribs, Beijing-style shredded pork, stir-fried lotus pond... As soon as you enter the convenience canteen of Nanhu Zhongyuan North Community, Donghu Street, Chaoyang District, the aroma hits your nose. The freshly-cooked food is steaming, attracting residents from the surrounding areas to line up to buy meals.

Through residents’ deliberation and consultation meetings and online questionnaire surveys on residents’ needs, Nanhu Zhongyuan North Community learned that residents hope to have a convenient canteen in the community to alleviate the dining difficulties of office workers and to make it convenient for empty-nest elderly people to have three meals a day at their doorstep.

The Donghu Street Community Office, Nanhu Zhongyuan North Community Party Committee, and the Residents' Social Welfare Committee introduced the Dafu Canteen organization based on the actual needs of residents and set up community convenience canteens to provide convenient, fast, high-quality and humane community services to residents in the jurisdiction.

The canteen prepares 6 kinds of meat dishes, 6 kinds of vegetarian dishes, 4 different flavors of staple noodles, and one soup every day, and provides 3 kinds of set meals: "one meat and one vegetable", "two vegetables and one meat", and "two meats and one vegetarian" for residents to choose from. The price range is from 15 yuan to 25 yuan, and you can enjoy a 15% discount if you use the pension and disability assistance card.

Since the community canteen opened for trial operation, more than a hundred people have come to buy meals every day. It attracts not only the elderly in the community, but also many young residents. The canteen will be adjusted and improved in the future based on the feedback and needs of the residents.

Chen Qi, the manager of Dafu Canteen who is in charge of operations, introduced that "while the canteen strives to provide dishes that satisfy the tastes of more people, it also plans to start serving breakfast and provide door-to-door meal delivery services for people with limited mobility." It is understood that Dafu Canteen has expanded from providing meals for nursing stations and nursing homes to targeting the diversified community catering market, and is centrally providing meals for more communities and convenience stations.
