IT Home reported on August 12 that a parking lot in San Francisco has recently caused dissatisfaction among residents due to noise problems at night. The parking lot was rented by the driverless taxi company Waymo to park its idle vehicles at night.
According to software engineer Sophia Tung, Waymo began to gradually occupy the parking lot on July 28 and will take over the entire parking lot in the near future. As the company's driverless taxi service is open to all San Francisco residents, the number of vehicles returning at night has increased significantly. IT Home noted that the live broadcast shows that driverless taxis will "return home in large numbers" from 7 to 9 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and from 11 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
However, what bothers nearby residents is that when the parking lot starts to fill up (usually around 4 a.m.), the entry of a Waymo driverless taxi into the parking lot will trigger an hour-long "horn honking carnival."
Waymo responded that they are aware of the problem and are actively looking for a solution. The company said,The cause of an issue where the vehicle would occasionally honk when navigating a parking lot has been identified.
Still, the constant noise has disrupted the lives of nearby residents. Although Tung herself expressed interest in driverless technology, she also believes that the horn problem needs to be solved as soon as possible.
