In recent months, more and more South Korean officials and members of the conservative party led by President Yoon Seok-yeol have reportedly called for the development of nuclear weapons. The possibility of re-election of former US President Trump, who once complained about the high cost of stationing US troops in South Korea, has further intensified the debate over the development of nuclear weapons in South Korea.
But Shin said having an indigenously developed nuclear arsenal could be devastating to South Korea's diplomatic standing and economy.
"The alliance with the United States would face a serious rupture (if South Korea develops nuclear weapons), and if we withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, there would be various consequences, the first of which would be a direct impact on our financial markets," he said in an interview.
