In the early morning of August 10th, Beijing time, Chinese Olympic athlete Wu Yu from Shanghai fought hard against Turkish player Basnaz Cakiroglu in the women's 50kg boxing final, and finally defeated her opponent and brought back a precious gold medal from Paris.
Wu Yu, born in January 1995, is 29 years old this year. Like Olympic boxing champion Zou Shiming, she is from Guizhou. The year of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, her life trajectory also changed: Wu Yu, who was in the first grade of Changming Middle School in Guiding County, was sent by her mother Li Yan to Duyun City, Qiannan Prefecture to participate in the selection of sports students. After training for a summer vacation, she embarked on the road of boxing. Unlike many girls who would be opposed by their families to learn boxing, Wu Yu's ability to become a boxer was entirely her mother's choice. In order to let her daughter develop good habits, her mother sent her to the boxing team. "At first, because I was naughty and had poor self-control in study and life, there happened to be an opportunity to learn boxing, so she let me go. Maybe she wanted to let me suffer a little through boxing training and learn sportsmanship."
Later, Li Yan revealed in an interview that the original goal was to send Wu Yu's sister, but Wu Yu's age was just right and she was selected by the coach. Growing up in the countryside, Wu Yu likes climbing mountains and trees. After studying, he likes playing ball. Wu Yu is flexible and coordinated, so he was favored by the coach and later sent to the Bayi Team. In November 2020, the military's professional sports force was adjusted and reformed, and the Bayi Boxing Team was disbanded. Under the two-way selection of provinces and cities and athletes, Wu Yu registered in Shanghai Yangpu and became a Shanghai athlete.
Wu Yu, who persisted on the road of boxing, continued to win championships. On October 25, 2019, Wu Yu won the championship in the women's boxing 48-51 kg final of the 7th World Military Games, which was also the first women's boxing gold medal in the history of the Military Games. In March 2023, Wu Yu won the 52 kg championship of the 2023 Women's World Boxing Championships. In October 2023, Wu Yu won the women's 50 kg boxing championship of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, and thus qualified for the Paris Olympics. It is worth mentioning that Wu Yu once studied under Zhang Chuanliang, the coach of Olympic champion Zou Shiming. Her style of play is very agile and quite similar to that of her senior brother Zou Shiming.
