A cross-border light railway link connecting the Macao Special Administrative Region and Hengqin Island in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, is one step closer to completion, enhancing Macao's integration into the "one-hour living circle" of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The construction of the Macau Light Rail Hengqin Line has made new progress. At present, the station connection channel between the Taipa Line and the Hengqin Line has been completed and is expected to be opened to traffic within the year. The Macau Light Rail is expected to reach Hengqin in October, and the completion of the connecting channel between the two stations will enable the "same-level two-line" transfer.
The Macao Public Works Bureau announced last week that an interchange facility linking Lotus Station on Macao's Light Rail Transit Taipa line and HE1 station on the Hengqin extension line has been completed.
The connecting passage between the Taipa Line and Hengqin Line stations of the Light Rail is located on the east side of the first floor of the podium of the Cotai Lotus Complex (formerly the land of the Lotus Port), connecting the Hengqin Line HE1 Station and the Taipa Line Lotus Station. After completion, it will be possible to realize the "two lines on the same floor" transfer.
The 2.2-kilometer extension starts from HE1 station near Lotus Bridge in Macao, runs across Shizimen Waterway to Zhuhai's Hengqin Island through an underwater tunnel, and ends at HE2 station at the front of Hengqin Port.
The Macau Light Rail Extension to Hengqin Line project is a key cross-border livelihood project between Hengqin and Macau. The total length of the line is about 2.2 kilometers. The line will start at the "HE1 Station" in an elevated manner, gradually descend from the elevated route in the direction of the Lotus Bridge, pass through the Shizimen waterway in the form of a riverbed tunnel into Hengqin, and finally end at the "HE2 Station" at the Hengqin Port.
Construction of the extension line was completed earlier this year and testing has started. With the finalization of the interchange, the overall project is scheduled to be completed in November and put into operation by the end of the year, according to the bureau.
