The British Red Arrows perform a flying display at the Farnborough Air Show
The biennial Farnborough International Air and Space Exhibition was held at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Convention Center in the UK from July 22 to 26. According to foreign media reports, the air show attracted more than 1,200 exhibitors and 74,000 visitors, with a total transaction volume of 81.5 billion pounds (about 103.6 billion US dollars), including more than 250 aircraft orders and more than 800 aircraft engine orders.
According to the organizer, the British Aerospace Association, the air show is divided into six major themes: space, defense, sustainability, innovation, future flight and workforce, comprehensively displaying the latest aerospace technologies.
Brazil has performed well in the sales of military aircraft. Embraer has reached a number of deals with the Netherlands, Austria, Paraguay, Uruguay and other countries, with a total contract value of US$2.05 billion. On July 22, the Netherlands and Austria signed a contract with Embraer to purchase nine C-390 Millennium medium transport aircraft, with a contract value of 1.7 billion euros (about US$1.84 billion). Previously, Portugal, Hungary, the Czech Republic and South Korea also purchased this type of transport aircraft. The Paraguayan and Uruguayan Air Forces signed a contract with Embraer to purchase six A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft, which are scheduled to be delivered in 2025. The maximum flight speed of this type of aircraft is 590 kilometers per hour, the combat radius is 550 kilometers, and it can perform a variety of tasks. In addition, the US Air Force sent C-130J transport aircraft, F-35A fighter jets and others to participate in the static display at this air show, and the B-52 bomber performed a flight demonstration. The newly received F-16 fighter jets of the Danish Air Force also performed a flight show at the air show.
Affected by regional conflicts, the missile systems displayed by the European Missile Group have attracted the attention of many countries. The group displayed a new portable ultra-short-range air defense system for the first time at this air show. The system is a supersonic, autonomously guided interceptor after launch, which can strike targets such as fighters, helicopters and small drones regardless of weather conditions. In the future, it can be used for paratroopers, amphibious forces, etc. to improve the combat capabilities of individual soldiers. At the same time, the European Missile Group also introduced the relevant progress of a new intelligent cooperative weapon project called "Concerted Strike". The project focuses on integrating the optimized and improved artificial intelligence module into the British Air Force's "Spir" cruise missile to improve the ability to respond to tactical situations through real-time feedback.
In recent years, the field of drones has risen strongly, and related booths have also attracted the attention of participants. For the first time, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems of the United States showed a rendering of the "Prince of Wales" aircraft carrier equipped with a catapult and a launched "Open" drone. In 2022, in order to meet the needs of the US Air Force's "Cooperative Combat Aircraft" project, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems released the concept of the "Open" series of drones for the first time. Based on the core modules, this series of drones meets the needs of multiple tasks such as intelligence reconnaissance, electronic warfare and firepower strikes through different design layouts, power and payload combinations, including the "Open-1" long-flight situational awareness drone, the "Open-2" reconnaissance and strike drone, the "Open-3" imaginary enemy air combat training drone, and the "Open-4" stealth reconnaissance drone. It is reported that the concept map released at this air show is the carrier-based drone "Open-5". Mark Brinkley, spokesman for General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, said the company will create a new concept drone, the "Gambit-5," designed specifically for launch and recovery from aircraft carriers. The drone will focus on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, while integrating other functions to improve the overall combat capability of the aircraft carrier battle group. (Mu Sheng)
