On July 22, when I walked into Labian School in Baizhuang Town, Xunhua Salar Autonomous County, Haidong City, I saw that the teaching and office buildings, with the construction walls removed, were dressed in yellow and white "new clothes". Every window was wiped clean and bright. When I walked into the classroom, the door was new, the floor was new, the eye protection lamps were new, and the wall skirts were also new.
"One teaching building and one office building were damaged after the earthquake. In order to allow the children to return to school as soon as possible, the two buildings were fenced off for construction. The school vacated three warehouses and integrated the three classrooms of the Labian Kindergarten to accommodate six classes. The teachers work in their own dormitories." Speaking of this, Zhan Hongming, the political and educational director of Labian School, still couldn't believe that the changes before his eyes happened in just a few months.
Last winter, the 6.2-magnitude Jishishan earthquake in Gansu Province hit Xunhua County. The vast majority of party members and cadres in the education department of Xunhua County gathered unprecedented strength. The post-disaster reconstruction project of Xunhua County's education was started in advance, and the repair and reinforcement project of Labian School became the first project started in Haidong City's post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.
Racing against time and fighting against the severe cold, when the conditions for construction were not met in the severe winter, the construction team created the conditions and placed several stoves in one room at the same time to ensure the construction progress. In order to ensure the quality of construction, all the damaged walls of the houses were demolished and steel mesh was installed to make the walls doubly strong.
"On the second day after the earthquake, the Education Bureau of Xunhua County selected an appraisal unit to conduct a safety appraisal of the damaged schools. Faculty and staff from the bureau entered the schools in different areas to conduct safety inspections. A repair and reinforcement plan was developed in about ten days. On January 15, the first batch of post-disaster education recovery and reconstruction projects in Xunhua County started, and were completed and accepted in May this year." said Ma Haiying, director of the Project Office of the Education Bureau of Xunhua County.
From January to May, the construction of a 2,088-square-meter teaching building and a 363-square-meter office building was completed, and the improved teaching facilities and equipment were also completed and accepted.
Ma Haiying said: "38 schools in the county have implemented post-disaster reconstruction. We have made improvements to varying degrees according to the disaster situation. Labian School is the school that has made the most improvements. We have reinforced the interior walls of the teaching building, painted the interior and exterior walls, laid floor tiles, installed wall panels, eye protection lamps, stair handrails and heating modifications."
After repair, reinforcement and improvement, the children's learning environment has become more comfortable, and their young hearts are always warmed by these adults.
The day after the earthquake, students came to school as usual. The teachers first comforted them, and after learning about the disaster situation of the students' families, they decided to temporarily suspend classes for two days. During these two days, the teachers worked day and night and finally made room for a "new classroom" for the children.
On the third day after the earthquake, the children received a notice to return to normal classes, and they were also greeted with heartwarming services such as "increased psychological counseling and comfort", "reduced academic pressure", and "increased time for extracurricular activities".
Zhan Hongming said: "These children are experiencing an earthquake for the first time. After resuming classes, they are unable to quickly get back into the learning state. The teachers try to help them relax, adjust their mindsets, and go to school happily."
Han Meihua, a student in Class 2, Grade 6, wrote in her diary: "The disaster relief team marched forward tenaciously amid the aftershocks. Even the cold weather could not stop them from moving forward. Disasters are ruthless, but people are kind. I am extremely proud to have grown up in such a motherland."
In addition to the students, second-grade teacher La Zhongping also felt the love and warmth.
La Zhongping lives in Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County. Her house was severely damaged after the earthquake and she could not return home because the road was closed. The leaders and colleagues of Xunhua County Education Bureau and Labian School cared for her, often comforted her and encouraged her, which moved her deeply.
La Zhongping said: "The leaders and colleagues of the Education Bureau personally came to Minhe to visit my family and gave them condolence money and food. It was really a timely help and I was very touched."
Now, La Zhongping's house in her hometown is being built by the government and she will be able to move in soon. The school's office building has also been renovated, and her work and life are full of new expectations and beauty. She smiled and said, "We can already work in the new office building. The floor tiles, doors, and lights are all brand new. It's a big improvement. The office conditions are getting better and better. I look forward to a new life in the new semester!"
