Actually, I finished watching the new movie a few days ago.DecryptionBut I just couldn't muster the energy to write, and always felt like there was something stuck in my throat... Now I have finally figured it out a little, and I can talk about it briefly.

I've seen a lot of people talking about this movie.“It doesn’t look like a Chen Sicheng movie”Indeed, this was also my first impression.

If you ask people about their evaluation of Chen Sicheng's works, most of them will probably give negative reviews.Because he is very "smart", good at setting topics, and draws on a lot of advanced experiences... but also because of his stereotyped narrative and some unexpected and bizarre techniques, so although his works are not highly praised, basic entertainment is always guaranteed.

This "Decryption" seems to be the opposite, or Chen Sicheng has thrown away as much of what he is best at as possible, and turned to do the hard work that not many people are willing to do now.Photographing people, history and thoughts

It’s a pity that I can’t really get into the role.

Let's first talk about what the film does well, that isThe photography, pictures and transition designs are all eye-catching. Except for the ordinary imagination, in terms of visual expression alone, it is considered to be among the best among domestic films.

Take the long dream scene in which Rong Jinzhen enters the amusement park to decipher the Purple Code as an example - the core setting of the film is that the protagonist is half asleep and half awake, relying on dream interpretation to decipher the code - all the objects that appear have prototypes in his real life, such as the giant lamp, which is the chess he played with Xi Yis, the carousel, which is the teapot at home, the pirate ship, which is the pen given by Rong Xiaolai, and the Ferris wheel at the back is a wheel closely related to the Purple Code.

These scenes and designs not only conform to the characteristics of the "combination of truth and falsehood" of dreams and reality, but also magnify the emotional points of Rong Jinzhen's dreaming and dream interpreting characters. It is indeed a good show.

However, these advantages are precisely one of the reasons why I cannot get into the role.

In my opinion, the biggest selling point and highlight of "The Decryption" is the unique talent of the genius Rong Jinzhen, as well as the display of dreams and decryption. Chen Sicheng has also played with similar things in the "Detective Chinatown" series of films, but this time he has magnified this technique infinitely. However, these things alone are not enough to support the entire film, so more "positive" main ingredients are added.

Many people think that Chen Sicheng’s ability to calm down and use a more classical story structure to tell the existence and relationship between people and history is an improvement...but I always feel that something is not right.

The story of "Decryption" is inseparable from "patriotism and serving the country".

I actually quite like the first third of the film, where Rong Xiaolai educates Rong Jinzhen, who has no idea about "country".A country is a place and a people that must be protected. What Rong Jinzhen saw and heard before the Kuomintang retreated to Nanjing City prompted him to decipher the secret message on behalf of his teacher, making him unconsciously become a part of protecting the country.

Unfortunately, when Rong Jinzhen entered 701 and began his decryption career, the narrative in this regard seemed to come to an abrupt end.

What the last two-thirds of the film really wants to talk about is that Rong Jinzhen slowly begins to understand Xi Yis's definition of "country".The country is family, friends, bridges, flowing water, wind and rain, and the chirping of cicadas.

In my opinion, Chen Sicheng does not have much ability to balance grand narrative and personal narrative. Although the idea of the film is fine, he is obviously stuck on the scale of qualitative and emphasis. In the end, he just raised it high and put it down lightly (before his death, Rong Jinzhen combined his two definitions of the country into one, and also stated that "there was no choice"). He did not make any mistakes, but it is far from being good.

The movie only focuses on the "technique" of "how to serve the country" but is vague about the "reason" of "why to serve the country".

So, I have to remember that Chen Sicheng is a very smart person.Smart enough not to step on landmines nor to express sincere opinions, that’s enough for the movie so far.

Therefore, the biggest impression that "Decryption" gave me is that it uses a historical background and a not-so-clever chess-playing method to keep up appearances. What people are really interested in is the "genius of the era" rather than "the genius and the era in which he lives."
