IT Home reported on July 31 that Italian scientists have developed a four-legged robot specifically for cleaning up garbage, especially cigarette butts that harm the marine ecology. The robot, called VERO, is equipped with a leg vacuum cleaner and can autonomously identify and clean up garbage on various terrains.

According to IT Home, VERO was designed and manufactured by a research team from the Dynamic Leg Systems Laboratory of the Polytechnic Institute of Genoa, Italy. In a paper published in April, the research team pointed out thatCigarette butts are extremely harmful to marine ecosystems, which release toxic chemicals and microplastics into the ocean during decomposition. In addition, cigarette butts are the second most common unprocessed garbage in the world. Wheeled or tracked robots are difficult to operate in complex terrain, and VERO's four-legged design provides a solution.

VERO is specially designed for this common small-scale garbage. The operator only needs to set the target area, and VERO will patrol autonomously, use the onboard camera and neural network to identify garbage, and suck it up with the leg vacuum cleaner.

The test results show that VERO can operate stably on complex terrain.90% of the identified cigarette butts were successfully removed.

VERO is still in the research and development stage, but the research team said that the robot's design can be applied to multiple fields, such as agricultural spraying, infrastructure inspection and construction.
