IT Home reported on July 25 that according to TechCrunch, Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving taxi service company, has shipped a batch of China-made Zeekr electric minivans to the United States. Currently, Waymo uses Jaguar I-Pace electric crossovers to provide driverless services in many cities in the United States.

IT Home noticed that the news coincided with General Motors' announcement that it would abandon its Cruise Origin driverless mini van project. Due to the lack of a steering wheel and pedals, Cruise Origin encountered many regulatory obstacles, and cost was also an issue.

Zeekr is a brand under Geely Auto. This electric mini van is released in 2021, designed and developed by a Swedish team and produced in a Chinese factory. The vehicle has a five-seat layout and four sliding doors, making it very convenient to get on and off.

However, Waymo emphasized thatThe China-made self-driving car is equipped with its sixth-generation sensor suite, most of which was developed and manufactured by Waymo itself. The vehicle does not contain any software or sensors provided by Zeekr when it leaves the factory, and the relevant hardware and software are integrated in the United States.

Currently, Waymo only has a few Zeekr self-driving cars in San Francisco. And no driverless tests have been conducted yet, but rather the tests are being conducted by human drivers.

Waymo's next-generation self-driving system is simpler than the current fifth-generation system and is equipped with more powerful lidar, radar, cameras and microphones, which will help the company expand its business in cold regions in the future. In addition, the system has been tested in extremely hot environments such as Death Valley and Las Vegas.

Compared to the ill-fated Cruise Origin, Waymo's Zeekr minivan is equipped with a detachable steering wheel, which is expected to simplify the approval process. In addition, considering that the Jaguar I-Pace has been discontinued, this Zeekr electric vehicle is expected to become Waymo's future main model.
