[Smart Car News] Remember Mercedes-Benz?Mercedes-Benz EQCparameterpicture)? It is the German luxury carmaker's first electric SUV and the first model to bear the "EQ" name. In fact, the model has been out of production for a year. According to Jan Weber, the international EQ product communication department of Mercedes-Benz, the EQC has been discontinued as planned in the second quarter of 2023. However, many people have only heard about it now.

In July 2022, a report in the German version of Business Insider stated that the EQC was scheduled to be discontinued in May 2023, which put the car's short life in the spotlight for a time, but that was it.

The Mercedes-Benz EQC has never entered the US market and is mainly sold in Europe and China, but it has not been very popular with consumers. According to sales data from GoodCarBadCar, EQC sales in Europe between 2019 and 2022 were just over 51,000 units, and its performance in China was even worse, with sales of less than 14,000 units in the same period.

The EQC is based on the same platform as the internal combustion-powered GLC and is powered by 402-horsepower dual electric motors powered by an 80-kWh battery pack. Although it was never sold in the United States, Mercedes-Benz is at least initially preparing to launch it here, with the EQC having an EPA range rating of 220 miles (about 354km) and a WLTP figure of 259 miles (about 417km) on a full charge.

The EV was delayed for more than a year, and ultimately, "after a thorough evaluation of market developments," the German automaker decided not to bring it to the U.S. In other words, they didn't think it would be a hit.

Nevertheless, the Mercedes-Benz EQC will return as a pure electric sedan based on the newly developed MMA platform that can also support internal combustion engine powertrains. The name of the model has not yet been officially announced, but spy photos of prototypes show that the upcoming electric sedan will be about the same size as the EQC.BMW 3 SeriesandAudi A4About the same.

The next-generation EQC is set to debut next year and will be the first of four initial electric vehicles on the MMA architecture, along with two crossovers and a station wagon that could replace the current GLA, GLB and CLA Shooting Brake.

Meanwhile, Mercedes is rethinking its electric vehicle plans due to the lack of popularity of its EQ models, investing more in combustion cars and delaying other electric platform investments.
