Jackie Chan is making a new movie again.

It has action elements, a classic IP, and famous artists as co-stars. However, this movie still failed both at the box office and in terms of reputation.

The "AI face-changing" technology, which was the biggest gimmick of the movie, has become the biggest risk of the movie.

How is this going?

AI Jackie Chan, is his reputation in tatters?

Jackie Chan's new film "Legend", according to the creators, is a sister film to the 2005 classic film "The Myth".

The film makes extensive use of AI deep fake technology to recreate Jackie Chan at the age of 27. The young digital Jackie Chan appears in more than 70% of the film.

During the promotional stage, "Legend" also gained enough sentiment and popularity thanks to the interaction between the two "Jackie Chans" on the same screen across time.

I thought it was a reminder of the past, but it turned out to be a waste of audience's emotions and intelligence.

The story follows the same routine from 20 years ago. The love story between Jackie Chan, Zhang Yixing and Guli Nazha is like a costume version of "Burning Winter"; the jokes are low-level and childish, the editing is basically hard-cut, and there is a sudden sermon at the end.

In short, the whole movie is like an absurd comedy, so bad that it makes the film and television critics UP ecstatic.

As for AI Jackie Chan, there are even more flaws in his character than soldiers on the battlefield.

Due to the use of AI face-changing, the quality of AI Jackie Chan is very blurry. Others are 4k, but he is 1080p, and the skin is severely smoothed.

The "AI blast" makes his expression almost unchanged throughout the whole process. Except for the full side face angle, any other angle is extremely weird, his eyes are empty and out of focus, and his emotions are stiff and discordant.

In the violent scene,

AI Jackie Chan shows an awkward but polite smile

In short, every frame with him has an AI texture, as if it were a copycat movie.

Netizens commented: Ma is a better actor than AI Jackie Chan.

The audience, who had been looking forward to the new technology, all walked out of the cinema cursing.

In fact, what happened to "Legend" is not an isolated case.

On the road of AI exploration in the film and television industry, works such as "Wind and Rain Send Spring Back", "The Sound of the Wind", and "Three Thousand Crows" have also been affected. Either "zombie faces" are rampant, or the picture quality is so low that it makes people doubt their lives.

Zhao Lixin's face was replaced by Zhou Yiwei in "The Whistleblower"

Of course, there are also successful cases.

The youthful versions of Wu Jing and Andy Lau in "The Wandering Earth", the young version of Will Smith in "Gemini Man", and the time travel of Robert De Niro in "The Irishman" are all eye-catching.

Not only do they successfully make the actors look younger, but they also make it so that the audience hardly feels any sense of disorientation while watching the movie.

So, why are some works so realistic while others are so flawed that they can be seen as fake at a glance, even though they all use AI technology?

This brings us to the current development status of AI technology.

AI face-changing, is it omnipotent?

At present, there are generally three solutions for using AI to change faces and reduce age in film and television dramas.

The first is a pure AI solution.

It mainly relies on artificial intelligence algorithms for facial replacement, is suitable for medium and long-range shooting, has a fast processing speed, and can quickly generate a large number of shots.

However, the precision of facial fusion and expression restoration is relatively low, and the head rotation angle is also subject to certain restrictions. Currently, no movie has fully adopted this solution.

The second isAI+post-production.

It combines artificial intelligence technology and post-production methods to achieve higher facial fusion and richer expression restoration, and is also suitable for medium and long-range shooting.

This solution can maintain AI efficiency while optimizing details through post-processing adjustments to improve overall visual quality.

In the "Guardians of the Galaxy" series of movies, the transformation of characters or the processing of special effects are completed through AI + post-production.

The best-reviewed and most expensive solution at the moment is the pure CG (computer-generated graphics) solution.

It is suitable for close-ups and complex scenes that require extremely high details.

Through CG technology, highly realistic facial models can be created to achieve perfect facial replacement and detailed performance. There are no restrictions on head movements and it can adapt to various angles and lens requirements to achieve the ultimate visual effects.

"Alita: Battle Angel" was produced using a pure CG solution.

In this film, the protagonist Alita is created almost entirely from computer-generated images, and her facial model has been carefully designed and adjusted to achieve a high degree of realism and detail.

"Gemini Man" also adopted this approach, referring to Will Smith's movies when he was young to create a digital model of him when he was 23 years old.

But the film cost nearly 1 billion yuan to make.

As for "Legend", director Stanley Tong once told the media that compared to the high-cost "Gemini Killer", "Legend" uses deep fake, AI learning and 3D technologies, and the cost is only about 20% to 30% of "Gemini Killer".

But the reality is that cheap products are really not good, and the effectiveness is not even 20%.

As for AI actors and generated videos, compared to AI face-changing technology, they are still in the baby steps stage.

Most of the AI-generated videos currently available on the market are still at the level of “fake at first glance”, far from being indistinguishable from the real thing.

In general, at this stage, AI face-changing technology is more of a stopgap measure in most film and television dramas.

It is not a stepping stone to a creative leap, but a patch that is used only when absolutely necessary.

Will AI really replace actors one day?

With the continuous development of technology, AI may one day be able to make the fake look real.

But is this a good thing for the industry and the audience?

The answer is probably some are happy while others are sad.

The unlimited potential of technology has caused major companies to rush to take action, fearing that they will become "outsiders" that lag behind the times.

In addition, AI tools can be used to accomplish tasks such as script writing, special effects production, and music design, greatly improving project production efficiency and reducing film costs.

A few days ago, the first AIGC original fantasy short drama in China, "The Mirror of Mountains and Seas: Cutting Through the Waves", was officially launched, which received rave reviews from many people inside and outside the industry, and also allowed many people in the industry to see new opportunities.

But the use of AI has also ignited the anxiety and fear of actors.

The protracted "Hollywood Strike" is because practitioners are worried that AI will take away their jobs, and that the extensive use of AI will cause copyright risks, layoffs and other crises.

Opportunities and crises are always two sides of the same coin.

In the foreseeable future, although AI will be able to imitate human performances and emotional expressions, it will not be able to truly replace the unique charm and creativity of human actors.

The reason why actors can become the soul figures in film and television works is that they can integrate their life experiences and emotional experiences into the roles, giving the characters life and soul.

This is something AI cannot do.

Although the use of AI in films has caused a lot of controversy and reflection, it will definitely be the general trend in the future.

In the days to come, we look forward to seeing more works that deeply integrate technology and art.
