After several rounds of developer betas, Apple has launched the first public betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS Sequoia. Public betas are considered safer testing versions than developer betas. Features in public betas have usually been tried out in developer betas for some time and confirmed to work properly.

The first public beta versions include iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

While it's unclear what features will be included in the first public beta, it's likely to be similar to the previous developer beta.

As with developer betas, users are strongly advised to avoid installing beta operating systems or other beta or RC software on "mission-critical" or primary devices. Due to the small chance of data loss, testers should use secondary or non-essential hardware and ensure that adequate backups of critical data are always available.

Anyone interested in trying Apple's upcoming software upgrades can sign up for Apple's beta software program on its website. iOS 18 includes several new home screen customization options. For example, you can now place app icons and widgets anywhere on the iOS home screen and add color to them.

Other features you can check out in the iOS 18 beta include a brand new layout for the iPhone Photos app. The Messages app will also get new features, including the ability to use a “tap to reply” feature on any emoji or sticker. In Wallet, the iOS 18 beta will give users early access to the “tap to cash” feature, which will allow Apple users to tap their devices together to make in-person payments.

Once you're done trying the iOS 18 beta, you can follow Apple's instructions here to revert to a previously released version of the operating system. The company notes that you can only revert to an older version of the software on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You can only use the beta on Apple Watch until iOS 18 officially launches in the fall.

Another feature that caught everyone's attention at WWDC was Apple Intelligence, the iPhone maker's response to the current artificial intelligence craze. It will not appear in today's public beta. Once released, it will be limited to iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices.
