Oppo and Ericsson today announced that they have signed a global cooperation agreement for 5G patent cross-licensing. Under the multi-year agreement, Oppo will pay royalties for the use of 5G technology in its future devices, while the two parties will also cooperate on device testing and marketing activities.

OPPO Chief Intellectual Property Officer Feng Ying said the collaboration is another step for OPPO to build a long-term and healthy IP (intellectual property) portfolio, and the Shenzhen-based manufacturer looks forward to resolving IP disputes through "friendly negotiations and mutual respect for patent value."

Ericsson said the royalty-bearing licence deal would enable the equipment maker to "further invest in fundamental communications technologies".

The news comes a few months after Oppo and Nokia settled their 5G patent dispute. We are currently in a period of re-signing existing cooperation agreements, as Nokia has extended its partnerships with Samsung, Honor and Apple for devices using the next-generation cellular technology.
