here, scientific and technological personnel and master workers overcame many difficulties and spent just over two months to create the world's first double water internally cooled turbine generator; with no data, equipment and experience. next, a 12,000-ton hydraulic press was born here, becoming a historic breakthrough in the industrial history of new china.
ji yongping is a witness and inheritor of heavy industry in new china. ji yongping has been engaged in high-pressure pipe system welding and related technical work for 33 years, and has completed one arduous task after another in many major projects such as coal-fired boilers, gas turbine waste heat boilers, gasifiers, and solar thermal. “people’s spirit of overcoming technical difficulties and never giving up inspires us to continue to forge ahead in our studies and life.”

continuously study and cultivate "ingenuity"
in september 1991, ji yongping graduated from the shanghai boiler factory technical school and entered the pot pipe workshop (the predecessor of the pipe film workshop) with the first place in the level 4 electric welding of shanghai electric united company and became a young "welder".
the main products of the pipe workshop are the "three devices" of coal-fired boiler components - superheater, reheater and economizer, which are equivalent to the "heart" of the boiler. these "three devices" need to withstand the high temperature in the furnace and generate high-pressure steam when the unit is running, so their welding also brings particularly high requirements.
when he first started working in the workshop, he saw that the butt welds of small-diameter pipes welded by masters were beautifully formed, and each joint smoothly transitioned like a gold ring on his finger. ji yongping sighed to himself: "it is easier said than done to achieve such a level. i silently determined to learn real skills.”
in manual argon arc welding, holding and transporting the welding wire between fingers is a basic skill. therefore, ji yongping cut a piece of welding wire and placed it in his dormitory, where he practiced the stability and consistency of the wire feeding process from time to time. the dozens of scars left on his left and right arms are the marks of burns caused by manual arc welding spatter when participating in training and competitions and completing projects. over time, he continued to learn from the welding masters around him, and finally mastered the "embroidery" technique of small-diameter welding.
shanghai boiler factory co., ltd. has developed a series of advanced technologies such as efficient and clean power generation, green hydrogen, and green liquid fuel.
refining "craftsmanship" in tackling key problems and innovating
in 2011, in accordance with the general policy of national electric power development, we took stock of the situation and continued to optimize our coal power business while also striving to create new economic growth points in the coal chemical industry and heavy petrochemical equipment market. the project of dismantling the original metal structure workshop and building a new joint factory came into being. the new factory was officially completed on july 16, 2012, marking a new level of shangguo's large-scale heavy chemical equipment manufacturing capabilities.
immediately afterwards, a number of major chemical projects were processed and produced in this workshop. on march 12, 2013, shangguo successfully signed a gasifier internals manufacturing contract with the largest single capacity in the world, providing 2 units of 3,200 tons/ shell dry coal pulverized pressurized gasifier internals for tiantou coal capacity grade. similar domestic products have always needed to be imported before. this project is the first time to achieve independent design and manufacturing in china.
"during the implementation of the shell gasifier project, the upper pot faced new technical challenges. especially the welding of 180° forgings of nickel-based dissimilar steels. since the welding gap is only 2 mm, the welding operation technology and experience are extremely demanding. ." ji yongping recalled.
ji yongping's team, together with the technical staff, relied on their excellent professional skills and unremitting efforts, and finally overcame this technical difficulty through repeated trials and innovations. they used special welding guns and special grooves, and used a variety of welding methods to successfully solve the problem of weld adhesion between adjacent welds. this achievement not only won the first prize of the national machinery industry quality activity achievements, but is also widely used in various chemical products.
leading the team to cultivate “craftsmen”
the old industrial base of minhang, located in the middle of shanghai's industrial territory, continues to consolidate its original industrial advantages. at the same time, shanghai electric group has successively established multiple new energy sectors here with the "four king kong" industrial innovation and upgrading as the core, including shanghai hydrogen age technology co., ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of shanghai boiler factory co., ltd. . as the "four diamonds" transform and upgrade from the traditional energy equipment field to the emerging energy equipment and intelligent manufacturing fields, a number of old mechanical processing factories have also been improved and upgraded, becoming laboratories and birthplaces of new technologies, new processes, and new products. strongly support the new business of old enterprises. no matter in the past or now, the assembly lines of the "four king kongs" have never cooled down, and generations of industrial workers are continuing to struggle.
ji yongping has never stopped exploring and inheriting, cultivating and training new talents through projects. in 2011, the skill master welding studio named after him was established, and he was selected into the shanghai skill master studio in december 2023. as the leader, he leads the team to continuously research various new welding technologies, and recently successfully implemented robot hot wire tig wire fillet welding, achieving another "zero breakthrough" in the industry.
in ji yongping's view, welding is an essential basic skill in industry, and only through hard work can one become successful. as "shanghai craftsmen" in the new era, we must cultivate "craftsmanship", refine "craftsmanship", and educate "craftsmen" to achieve ourselves, others, and society, so that the craftsman spirit can create brilliance in the great mission of the new era. .
