bernard venet was born in château-arnoux-saint-auban in the south of france in 1941. he was influenced by art since childhood. at the age of 17, vinay moved to nice and worked as a stage set designer at the nice opera house. in 1963, he devoted all his energy to artistic creation and created his first sculpture without a specific shape, "heap of coal." in 1966, vinay settled in new york. over the next fifty years, he created a large number of works based on mathematical and scientific texts, becoming one of the pioneers of conceptual art.
in recent years, most of his sculptural actions have been based on the theme of lines, whether they are straight lines, polylines (angles), arcs (radians), or lines that have escaped geometric attributes, all of which are called "uncertain lines."
vinay's artistic career was marked by a series of notable milestones. in 1994, jacques chirac, then mayor of paris, invited vinet to exhibit twelve sculptures from his series "uncertain lines" on the champs elysées. after the success of the installation, venet embarked on a global exhibition tour. in 2008, sotheby's invited vinay to exhibit 25 of his large-scale sculptures. in 2010, a 30-meter-tall sculpture commissioned by french president nicolas sarkozy and created by venet was unveiled to celebrate the 150th anniversary of nice's return to france. in 2011, the world-famous palace of versailles in france invited vinet to hold a solo exhibition of his magnificent sculptures. in 2019, wiene's nearly 200-foot-tall "gigantic arc" on the e411 highway between namur, belgium, and luxembourg was completed. it has been hailed as europe's "largest public art work." in 2023, vinnet made a major return to the paris art scene, holding exhibitions in three spaces of the perrotin gallery and exhibiting a double arc installation in place vendôme.
