on september 27, the south korean defense procurement planning administration announced that it had successfully developed the first domestic engine for the k9 "thunder" self-propelled howitzer, marking the complete success of this project launched in 2021. the project costs approximately 32.16 billion won (equivalent to 24.5 million u.s. dollars) and is the result of the joint efforts of south korea's stx engine company, hanwha aerospace corporation and several other south korean defense companies. the main purpose is to reduce dependence on foreign defense components and achieve military success. technology is self-sufficient.
currently, the k9 self-propelled howitzer uses the german mtu mt881 ka-500 diesel engine, which is manufactured by stx engine company under a license agreement. however, south korea's defense procurement program administration stressed that the new domestic engine is expected to improve cost-effectiveness and enhance overall performance. this development is very beneficial to the export of k9 self-propelled howitzers, because exporting weapons using foreign parts requires additional approval procedures, and using domestic parts can simplify these procedures.
